Psalm 2

“Kiss the Son, that He not be angry and you perish on the way, For His wrath may be kindled quickly. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!” – Psalm 2:12 [NASB]
Psalm 2 is the first Messianic Psalm- its author inferred to be David, from its reference in Acts 4:25-26. The first church, with one accord in their prayer acknowledged the Anointed One as Jesus Christ. We have seen the fulfilment of part of the prophecy of this Psalm (Acts 4:27-28) while the rest will be fulfilled in the millennial reign of the Messiah.
To look into the prophetic aspect of this Psalm, we can divide it into 3 parts: (i) The Messiah is rejected by men and the people take counsel together against Lord and the anointed one (Vs.1-3). (ii) God views it in derision and He speaks of the plan of the Messiah’s birth and ministry (Vs.4-9). (iii) The Lord’s advice to the kings and rulers of the earth.
Our key verse key verse is an advice to all-even to those who gathered against Him: (a) Kiss the Son (b) or you will die in his anger (c) Trust in Him (Vs.10-12).
Let us look into the three parts of the Psalm:
The Rage (Vs.1-3): As a prophecy, it has been fulfilled in the rejection of Jesus Christ and His crucifixion at Calvary. We still see today many rejecting the Saviour and His people. But the has Lord promised: “..I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.”(Matt.16:18) In the book of Acts, we read of the apostles severely threatened by the High priest and the rulers; but the whole church prayed for strength to stand firm (Acts 4:29). As we come across similar situations today, can we pray the same way? Surely God will give His mighty power. “After they prayed, they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.” (Acts 4:31)
The Reign (Vs.4-9). When the whole world stands against the anointed one –the Lord laughs! Whatever the world says/does against the anointed one, sooner or later they must fall before the Triumphant One. Phil.2:9-10 says, “…in the name of Jesus every knee shall bow and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Everything is according to His divine plan and purpose- so man can only go along with His predetermined plan (Acts 4:28). God knows man’s rebellious nature – yet His incomparable love follows us through the gospel (Vs.7) and giving us the opportunity to become His children.
The Refuge (Vs.10-12). The advice to the whole world- Be wise- Kiss the Son!- Submit to Him! “Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.” (John 3:14-15) There are no other ways – Only one way! Only one answer for the whole world- Jesus Christ! We find two categories of people in this world- the saved and the unsaved. God leaves the choice to us- “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” (1Cor.1:18)
Dear friend, if you are still unsaved: -“God is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9). One chance: Submit your life to the Son –accept the gospel and be blessed!
Prayer:- “Heavenly Father, we humble ourselves in Your presence. Help us to follow You in reverent fear and take refuge in You alone. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.”
