Deuteronomy 12:1-32

Thursday, 16 April 2026

Rather, you must seek the LORD your God at the place of worship he himself will choose…..—the place where his name will be honored. -Deuteronomy 12:5 [NLT]

As God’s people were preparing to enter the land promised to them, the Lord spoke through Moses on how to conduct their lives in the land. Today’s reading pertains to worship and certain instructions He gave the people on the terms of worship.

The Lord called His people to be distinct from the nations around them in every way. Their lives were to reflect that they were set apart and so would not follow the customs, practises or worship styles that the pagan nations followed. Hence the Lord would assign a particular place of worship where they were to regularly gather. A few instructions on the aspect of worship can be considered as appropriate for us too:

• Cleansing

The first instruction the Lord gave was to cleanse the land of idol worship and everything pertaining to it. Vs.2-3 instructs them to destroy all marks of pagan worship- altars, sacred pillars, carved idols, high places—He said: “Do not worship the Lord your God in the way these pagan peoples worship their gods.” (V.4). Thus a thorough cleansing was to be done first, as part of their preparation for true worship to the Lord. In our day, more than the carved images or idols, many have set their hearts on other objects of worship- the visible signs of them imprinted in their minds and actions! Would you allow the Spirit of God to help you identify the idols in your life that need to be stamped out? Then only true worship to the Living God can happen!

• Consecration

The next thing the Lord instructs them is about bringing their offerings, tithes, possessions vowed to the Lord, special gifts to the designated place of worship (Vs.11,26)— the place where the LORD your God chooses to put his Name (V.21). He gave them instructions about the way the consecrated things were to be offered. Note this specific command: But be sure you do not eat the blood, because the blood is the life, and you must not eat the life with the meat. (V.23). This points us to God’s principle for atonement of sin through the blood—Leviticus 17:11 says: For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life. Hence the ultimate sacrifice of Christ, whose blood cleanses us from all sin—even our guilt-ridden conscience! Hebrews 9:14 is so clear: “How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God! Brothers & sisters, it’s the blood of Christ that consecrates us to give us a clean heart to worship God!

• Celebrate

V.7 says: There, in the presence of the LORD your God, you and your families shall eat and shall rejoice in everything you have put your hand to, because the LORD your God has blessed you. Gratitude for what the Lord has done and the blessings He has showered must be expressed in rejoicing before Him! Think of the innumerable blessings the Lord has bestowed on you—how often do you thank Him? How often does your heart override the thoughts of the “have nots” in your life and begin to be grateful for all, that in His kindness has given you? Psalm 103:2 says: “Praise the LORD, my soul, and forget not all his benefits"

Today as we understand some of the terms of worship, can we receive Christ’s cleansing for our hearts that we may be consecrated and so celebrate His goodness with grateful hearts before Him?

For Worship: LORD, there is no one like you!

For you are great, and your name is full of power. (Jeremiah 10:6)
