Psalm 62

“But I stand silently before the Lord, waiting for him to rescue me. For salvation comes from him alone.” -Psalm 62:5 [TLB]

Here is a Psalm of David, the cry of an afflicted man in high position, who his enemies try to destroy or else push him down from his dignity (Vs.3-4). But David is full of trust in God and is calm and confident that his enemies cannot succeed (Vs.1,2,5-7). This confidence in God, he tries to impart to his people (Vs.8). He then moves on to warn the wicked while encouraging the faithful ones—man is a mere breath compared to the powerful God and God in His goodness and mercy rewards those who faithfully serve Him (Vs. 9-12).

Patient Endurance:

One of the severest tests a believer goes through in his life is the patient endurance in times of trial. Every true believer expects God to act swiftly in their situation and save them from the ongoing troubles of life. But at times God uses these waiting periods to teach us the important lesson of patience. During these times, we have to have endurance in the midst of sufferings and wait patiently for God to act. For this also God provides us with His grace to confidently wait upon Him under the heavy burden of sufferings. We may look for a way of escape, but God will see to that we will not act upon our impulse. In today’s Psalm we see that, David is silently standing before God to vindicate him and rescue him from the hands of his oppressors. Ps. 27:14 NLT says: “Wait patiently for the LORD. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the LORD.”

Humility:

One another important factor underlying this act of waiting upon God's salvation is, Humility. Unless we learn this great lesson of humbling ourselves before God, we will not be able to go further in our Christian life which is nothing but developing a total dependence upon God. We were originally created to be ones who needs a complete dependence upon the creator God. Due to sin we started on an unchartered journey of self-reliance. This is the root cause of all our problems. This is why our old self is dealt with on the cross of Calvary; and hence we are released from the slavery to self-rule. As a believer in Christ, we are left with the free will of choosing Christ as our Lord, or in other words, He conducts our life on a daily basis. He comes and resides inside us and runs the life which will be pleasing to God. So to live like this we need humility. We need to open our eyes and see that we need Him and come to Him for help.  

In John's Gospel, Jesus tells us: "Take care to live in me, and let me live in you. For a branch can’t produce fruit when severed from the vine. Nor can you be fruitful apart from me. “Yes, I am the Vine; you are the branches. Whoever lives in me and I in him shall produce a large crop of fruit. For apart from me you can’t do a thing". [John 15:4-5 TLB]

In this psalm we see that David is totally depending upon God for His deliverance and vindication. This shows his humility and His faith in God. Unless one has this true humility, he or she will not have a proper faith life. As a conclusion of today’s meditation let’s ask ourselves this question:“Examine yourselves to see if your faith is genuine. Test yourselves. Surely you know that Jesus Christ is among you; if not, you have failed the test of genuine faith.” [2Cor. 13:5 NLT]
