“…for in truth the LORD sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears.” -Jeremiah 26:15[ESV]
Jeremiah was a prophet on a mission for almost forty years. He was God’s spokesman, but hardly anyone listened to him. His calling to be a prophet cost him a great deal of trouble—he underwent many trials in his life. Throughout his life, he was declaring God’s messages to the people of God and weeping over the fate of his own nation.
Jeremiah’s messages to the nation were centered on one point –A Turning to God to avoid punishment. But his pleas were continually rejected by the people. He was met with stiff resistance: “And all the people threatened him as he stood in front of the Temple.” (Jer.26:9 NLT).
Jeremiah may have been an unsuccessful person in the eyes of the world because no one listened to him; but in God’s sight, he was one of His very successful servants. God’s measuring yard for success is obedience and faithfulness regardless of any achievement in the worldly realm. As we examine the life of Jeremiah from our text today, we can see his
• Consecration- Jeremiah was set apart by God to take His word not just to His people but to the nations (Jer.1). He understood God’s call on him and dedicated himself to his duty fully despite the challenges.
• Certainty-He was convinced of the Lord’s word spoken to him to convey to His people. The Lord urged Jeremiah to speak in the house of the Lord everything He gave him- not to hold back a word (V.2). Jeremiah didn’t mince his words—but spoke all that the Lord had commanded him to speak (V.8).
• Courage-When the priests, prophets and people laid hands on him, Jeremiah didn’t run away-he wasn’t afraid to face them. He stood his ground even when they threatened to kill him. He had spoken against the temple and the city which couldn’t be endured by people; hence their anger burnt against him. Yet Jeremiah had the courage to stand by the word he had spoken from God.
There may be various reasons for Jeremiah’s rejection— People may not have the consciousness to acknowledge sin, righteousness and judgment. Or even though they knew the truth, they chose to walk in rebellion. Isaiah 59:1&2 says, “Behold, the LORD’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; nor his ear heavy, that it cannot hear. But your inequities have separated you from your God; and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear.”
God still reaches out to people through His Word and His people—a call to repent and turn to Him. The Lord God is slow to anger and abounding in love (Psalm 103:8) and is waiting eagerly to see people coming back to Him. He was willing to give His people a chance to return, as He told Jeremiah that people may listen and turn from their evil ways (V.3). Hence the duty of every believer is to be His representative in being a consecrated witness of His message to a dying world. In our day, there are various means to get His Word out to the lost and rebellious. If people heed His message, He relents from bringing judgement.
Today the message the Lord sends is loud and clear from John 3:16-18: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned….” If you haven’t heeded to the Creator’s call to turn to Him and be saved through His Son, don’t miss it—for there will be no more condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Rom.8:1).
The Call: Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth;
For I am God, and there is no other. (Isaiah 45:22)
Listen: 'Turn to ME'
