Leviticus 3:1-17

Friday, 01 May 2026

“If you present an animal from the herd as a peace offering to the LORD, it may be a male or a female, but it must have no defects.” Leviticus 3:6

Today’s reading focuses on one of the offerings that were instituted by God, for His people, whenever they would come before Him. This offering called the Fellowship offering is also called the Peace offering. Unlike in the world where peace deals are offered to reconcile two hostile parties, in the Bible, a peace offering is brought before God as a thanksgiving offering for all the goodness and benevolence that the offeror had received, or a fulfillment of a vow/a thank offering for a specific help from God in a time of deep distress. But what does all this portray? –every single offering pointed to the Messiah who was yet to come.

The significance of this offering and its application for us today are vital:

1. When we come to God with our offering, we need to bring our best, one without any defect. (vs1,6)  Since this is an offering of thanksgiving, we come not just with anything, but with the best that we have, because God has  always given us His best – this beautiful earth we live in, the air we breathe, the joy of friends and family and above all the best gift of His Son Jesus Christ , the blemish-less , blameless sacrifice for each one of us. (1Peter1:9)

2. The offering could be a male or female animal. (vs 1,6). That means, all are welcome to come to God. No one is rejected based on gender. As Gal 3:28 states “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” All that God expects is each one to come to Him as a living sacrifice with thanksgiving in response to Jesus’ sacrifice that brought us peace with God.

3. This sacrifice has another unique feature : it not only a sacrifice, but it also becomes a fellowship meal between God, the priest and the worshipper (Lev.3: 3; 7:11). Today we partake of the peace offering when we celebrate the Lord’s table where we come to the One through whom we have peace with God and we have the peace of God, and reconciliation with the God of peace.

“Think of this blessed feast with God. We who were once far off in the wicked and hostile imaginings, are now made nigh; we sit at God’s table as His children and hear Him say. Let us make merry and be glad; this My son was dead and is alive again.” (Meyer)

Jesus was the perfect peace offering on our behalf to God to help us find favor with him, so thatwe are no longer enemies of God but His children. He Himself became both our sin offering and peace offering, opening a way for us to enjoying a lasting fellowship with God.

The call is open even today—He stretches out His hand of peace to us. As Rev. 3:20 says – He stands at the door of our heart and knocks, waiting for us to open our lives to Him : to have a fellowship meal with us : an intimate, personal relationship with us.

Jesus took the first step toward us, offering His life as a restitution for our sin and thus bringing us peace (Isaiah 53:5). Would we respond to this great gift with deep reverence and praise, declaring all the time the good things He has done in each of our lives?—this will be our fellowship/ peace offering to Him.

Think on it: CHRIST- the Perfect Peace Offering: from God and to God
