“The voice of the LORD is powerful; The voice of the LORD is full of majesty.” –Psalm 29:4
This is a beautiful poetry written by King David wherein thunder is associated with the voice of the Lord that display His power, majesty and greatness.
We frequently hear of storms, hurricanes, landsides, hit several places around the world. They create havoc and people were astonished by the damage caused by them. As people stare in wonder at shattered houses, cars atop roofs, huge trees uprooted, they wonder at the great force with which all that was accomplished. Probably David would have witnessed a great storm and as he heard a thunder, was prompted to associate it with the powerful voice of the Lord.
Today, if there is one thing that people respect, its power. This psalm speaks about the power of God. David recognized the powerful voice of God, full of majesty. He recognized the God of glory who thunders! (Vs.3 & 4).
In Genesis, chapter 1, we see how from darkness and silence a voice is heard commanding light to appear and light appears enveloping the earth suspended in the darkness with no apparent means of support. Over and over again the voice reemerges and brings immense changes on the earth. The silence is broken by the sound of waves, whistling wind, chirping of birds and sounds produced by different living creatures which came into existence at the command of the powerful voice of the Lord. Thus He created the whole universe just by His Word.
At the end of it all, we can only say: “Wow, Awesome!” What a God!! No wonder the Psalmist declares in Psalm 33:8, “Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.” God declares in Isaiah 55:11, “so shall My Word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” God’s Word accomplishes what it desires! If He has sent a word of promise to you-He will bring it to pass!
What an awesome God we have! What a powerful Person to have in our life. Yet many neglect to spend time with Him, to talk to Him and obey Him. His word alone, spoken into your life can bring about a transformation that you could not dream of. Hebrews 4:12 [NLT] says: “For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword…”
When we say, God is awesome, it means there is nothing that He cannot do. He let the sun stand still sun for Joshua, brought down the walls of Jericho, parted the Red Sea and so on. But all this is nothing in comparison to sending His Son, Jesus Christ in human form to bear man’s sin and take its punishment so you and I could be saved eternally. Christ demonstrated the power of God both in the physical and spiritual realm, showing power that His spoken word had. He spoke and the paralytic man was healed and his sins forgiven (Luke 5:18-25), the winds were stilled and sea calmed (Matthew 8:26); the dead Lazarus rose to life again (John 11).
Dear friend, God wants to calm the tumultuous sea in your life; He wants to heal the paralysis or stagnancy that has incapacitated you; He wants to bring the wall down that is blocking you from moving forward; He wants to give you life in abundance here and in eternity— just by His Word! Will you open your heart for His Word?
Prayer: LORD Almighty, I understand Your voice is powerful…may it speak to me and transform me and every situation in my life. Amen
