His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and His kingdom is one that will never be destroyed. – Daniel 7:14
The reign of GOD and His Kingdom is forever! The kingdoms of the earth may rise and fall but His Kingdom and dominion is one that can never be destroyed.
The vision that GOD showed Daniel was of things that would happen in the near future and the far future. Several tyrannical and cruel regimes would come upon the earth as signified by the different beasts in the vision. History gives evidence of the partial fulfillment of this vision. There are some to be yet fulfilled. But one thing is evident in all of this: none of the kingdoms of the earth however powerful it may have been, have lasted. God’s Kingdom rules over all (cf. Psalm 103:19).
So then, here comes the significance of GOD’s everlasting Kingdom! In Daniel 7:13-14, the scene changes when we see the transition of the earthly kingdom to the heavenly in giving dominion, glory and a kingdom to Christ Jesus Himself- of which was prophesied/spoken “…of His Kingdom there will be no end.” (Luke 1: 33); “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom” (Hebrews 1:8). The heart of the matter: only His Kingdom will last forever; all other kings and kingdoms of the earth however powerful or prominent are only for a period.
Since only God’s Kingdom will last forever, one needs the assurance that he/she is in it. Jesus came to this earth and preached: “The right time has come,” he said, “and the Kingdom of God is near! Turn away from your sins and believe the Good News!” (Mark 1:15 GNT) The Good News is that Jesus is the Saviour, who points us to God’s Kingdom, through whom we can enter- He is the way, the truth and the life. When we acknowledge and accept Him as our Lord and Saviour, He makes us citizens of the everlasting Kingdom of God! His rule and reign in our lives will bring peace and joy and life everlasting! When we live by the principles of His Kingdom, we know that no matter what happens around us, God’s sovereign rule will guide our lives. A believer can have the confident hope that being in God’s sovereign rule, he/she can rest assured of God’s purposes in the outworking of circumstances in his/her life. The Lord Almighty decides the course of his/her life- not the world.
We see around us today, nations, rulers vying for power and dominion, trying to establish their rule and reign as if they are going to reign forever. The folly of it all is there will be a day they would all come tumbling down. Besides these we see violence and callousness on the increase with the motive to control. What perspective is the believer to have at such situations? Well, we have the assurance that one day, GOD’s reign and rule will be established on the earth through His Son, Jesus Christ and “…of the increase of His government and peace, there will be no end” (Isaiah 9:7).
The scepter of righteousness will rule the earth one day! GOD’s reign will bring justice and peace and His Kingdom will be an everlasting one! The Psalmist declared in Psalm 145:13 “Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and Your dominion endures throughout all generations.”
Can we pray thus: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. (Matt.6:9-10)
