WALK IN THE LIGHT OF HIS WORD

Sunday, 19 July 2020 Psalm 119:89-112

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” -Psalm 119:105

Imagine walking in the dark, with no sign posts and no light to guide you on your way— you are sure to get hurt and lost in the dark! Such is the human condition, lost in sin and wandering in the ways of the world. The Psalmist understands this situation and hence, throughout Psalm 119, he stresses the importance of understanding and following the Word of God which lights our path. As we dwell on Psalm 119:105, let us look into the power of God’s word.

  1. Salvation through the Word: So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ. [Romans 10:17] Hearing the gospel message, repenting and believing in Jesus Christ leads to salvation, which is the beginning of our Christian journey. We now need to faithfully walk with the Lord, continually meditating on His word and obeying His instructions.

  2. Sanctification through the Word: Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. [John 17:17] Sanctification is a continuous process of growing from one degree to another degree of holiness in the Lord. Our Savior’s words emphasize here that the truth of the word of God needs to dwell in our hearts that we may be sanctified daily.

  3. Protection through the Word: Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him. [Proverbs 30:5] While we live in this world, there is an ongoing battle with the forces of darkness that try to distract and dissuade us from following the Lord. During those periods of struggle and trial, let us not lose focus but proclaim the promises of God and trust in His protection and mighty deliverance.

  4. Guidance through the Word: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. [Proverbs 3:5-6] Are you looking for direction in some area of your life? Do not make hasty decisions that seem wise by the worldly standards. Rather, meditate on God’s word, allow Him to calm the uncertainties and doubts within you and let His word guide you in the God-ordained path.

  5. Blessed through the Word: Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. [Joshua 1:8] When we lead a righteous life, walking in the way of the Lord, He will guide us in every area of our life and we shall thrive like trees planted along streams of water.

The Word of God is the lamp that lights our path and shows us the way in this dark and perverse world. Without the instructions of His word, we would be lost and confused. We should therefore, take care to persistently follow in His word, so that we do not stumble and fall or lose the way to our eternal destination with God. So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts. (2 Peter 1:19)

Prayer:

Abba Father, I renew my commitment today to meditate on Your Word continually. I pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit to reveal to me the depth of Your Word that I may grow and be conformed to the image of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
