WALKING IN THE LIGHT

"O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the LORD." -Isaiah 2:5

The Book of Isaiah is filled with prophecies that point to Israel’s apostasy and its consequences- the judgment God would bring upon the nation. On the other hand, it also abounds in prophecies of hope born out of God’s future restoration of Israel under the reign of the Messiah. 

Light and darkness are two familiar symbols that anyone can relate to. If one does not walk in the light, he is prone to stumble and fall. The expression Walking in the light used by Old Testament writers meant a life committed to the LordAlmighty and living it pleasing to Him. Hence those in darkness are far away from God and His way.

The key verse from today's reading stands in the middle of two themes— Verses 1-4 describe the reign of God's kingdom among the nations and Verses 6-22, point to the imminent judgment spoken against the wickedness of the people. If we connectboth the themes through this verse, we see an emphasis to walk in the light of God in view of the coming judgment.

Throughout the book of Isaiah, we see this pattern. But interestingly, there are other areas where the basis on which the believer is called to walk in light is, on the love and mercy of God. We need to get the right perspective—on one side is the love and mercy of God and on the other, we have the just God who will punish sinners. To be walking rightly, we need a balance of both. Both the doctrine of the righteousness of God and the love of God, are to be evenly considered in walkingupright according to the light given through His Word. Let God’s Word illuminethis aspect from the beginning of our walk with the Lord. 

This is the balance mentioned by Apostle Paul when he wrote in Romans 6:1-2:    "What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?" Both the tones are set very clearly—a loving tenderness and a warning! Both keep us safe from any erroneous presumptions. 

Now, what does it mean by “walking in the light?” The Psalmist says, “The LORD is my light and my salvation…” (Ps.27:1). Jesus Christ, the Light of the world brought us salvation. John 8:12: Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” We who were once darkness are called to the saving grace through the gospel of Christ. “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.” (Ephesians 5:8). Now we have to walk in the newness of life which we have received from God. Sin darkens our state but obedience to God's Law, illumines us and our ways. That sets in us a pattern to live righteously and pleasing to God, through the illumination of the Word of God to our souls by the Holy Spirit. 

Can we start our day by sitting at the Lord’s feet to enlighten us to walk in the light of His word? Only by serious meditation of God’s Word and prayer will we be able to walk in the light. Once we walk in the light then we will become a light to the dark world around. Let us walk in obedience to the Word of God and hence walk in light of the LORD!

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I submit myself to walk in light; please give me the illumination required from Your Word through Your Spirit. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
