“Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good ..”  Psalm 135:3

The Book of Psalms are considered by scholars as a book that contains songs, hymns and prayers that are used to worship God by His people all through the centuries. There are various types of Psalms that are written, but if there is one theme that is running across the 150 psalms, it is “Praise” to God.

Today’s Psalm is one that begins and ends with praise to God who is as Psalm 147:1 says “fit to receive it.” As the psalmist exhorts servants, ministers, families and individuals to praise God, he gives us sufficient reason for it. He declares that God is great and so is to be praisedgreatly, and that He is not an idol but a Living, Personal God who is deeply interested in those whom He has created. If these are not enough reasons to praise Him, the psalmist gives you some more reasons that will cause you to be in awe of Him and your only response will be “Praise”.

This is what he tells us about what God has done for us:

1. Chosen and Treasured (vs 4)– Out of all the nations in the world, the Jews were chosen by God to be His own treasured people for a reason (Deut. 7:6). It was not because they had any unique quality or status, but because of God’s love for them and faithfulness to His covenant given to their forefathers . He wanted to use this nation to reveal His love to all the other nations. Was this choice only for the Jews? No! This unique privilege of being God’s special people is now given to every man who would open his/her heart to the love of God displayed in Christ Jesus. When we open our hearts and lives to Jesus, the Bible tells us that we come a chosen and special people (1Peter 2:9 &Titus 2:14) to declare His praise and eager to do good works . We become those precious gems in His crown. (Zech 9:16)

2. Heir with an Inheritance (vs 10-12): As God’s own children, the Jews were assigned their portion and their boundaries in this world. To fulfill this plan, God defeated every people of the land of Cannan and gave it as an inheritance to His people, that we see them exist in the very same place as a nation today. No matter who plots or plans, their inheritance can never be taken away. In the same as sons and daughters of God, He has assigned us our inheritance through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (1Peter 1:3-5). Peter does not describe what our inheritance is, maybe because it was too wonderful for him to do it. But he does tell us that this inheritance can never spoil, fade or perish and it is kept for us in heaven – that is God Himself – whom we will enjoy forever, and no one can take us away from Him. The world and everything in it will perish at the second coming of our Lord, but the power of God will keep us until that day when we inherit our inheritance.

3. Justified and Comforted – Through the scriptures we see God deal with the nation of Israel in a just way. Sin was always punished, but every time they returned to Him in repentance, He gave them rest on every side. Today, God did not leave us as orphans. He sent us the Holy Spirit to live in us, who will convict us of sin, righteousness and judgement, and comfort us in times of trouble. Because of this wonderful work of the Spirt we stand free from guilt and secure in the Lord.

Aren’t these reasons enough to Praise HIM?

With the world fast spiraling down to its doom, we once again encounter this God who has chosen us, keeping us and comforting us until His return.

Don’t Forget – A continuous lifestyle of praise here on earth will prepare us for an eternal life of worship.
