“YOU ALONE ARE GOD!”

Psalm 86

“For You are great, and do wondrous things;

You alone are God.” -Psalm 86:10

The Psalms of David are unique in that they are the outpouring of his soul- his desperation, desires, downfalls….yet overwhelming praise of God, his confidence and trust in Him and an intimacy that defies all human relationship! All of us at one time or the other can relate to its verses and find comfort and strength in life. Psalm 86 too is a combination of prayer and praise. David cries to the Lord to save him, banking on God’s abundant mercy. Yet in the midst of the prayer is the Psalmist’s exultation in the greatness of God, his trust in God’s marvelous deeds which gives him hope of God’s timely help. David declares the greatness of God: “among the gods, there is none like You, LORD; no deeds can compare with Yours.” God Himself declares that HE is God and there is no other (Isaiah 45:22). Further, in Isaiah 40:25: "To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One. Truly there is none like Him! He is Incomparable! He is Infinite! He is the Immortal, Invisible, the Only God! (1Tim.1:17). See what the Bible says of all man-made idols to whom he tries to give his worship: “Their idols are like scarecrows in melon fields; Since they cannot walk, they must be carried. Do not be afraid of those idols, because they can’t hurt you, and they can’t help you either.”(Jer.10:5)! Then why put your trust in them? The Psalm itself displays the many characteristics of the Living God who is worthy of our worship:

1. He is forgiving, good and abounding in love (V.5)

2. One who hears our cry for mercy (V.6)

3. One who does great deeds (V.8)

4. A Great God who does marvellous deeds (V.10)

5. His name is to be feared (V.11)

6. One who delivers us from the depths (V.13)

7. A Compassionate and gracious God (V.15)

8. Slow to anger and abounding in love and faithfulness (V.15)

9. One who shows strength on behalf of His servants (V.16)

10. One who helps and comforts (V.17)

Who is like Him? Awesome in His majesty and Power yet gentle in His love, compassion and comfort to man! If only one would acknowledge Him as God and give his/her allegiance to Him! All of creation begs our attention to the Creator God-He who created the heavens, and fashioned the earth, put everything in its place (Isa.45:18). No one can miss His handiwork in man himself (fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). Could we ever fully comprehend the amazing systems of our body that function to keep us alive?! We can only stand in awe of God’s greatness when we think on these things!

Dear friend, if you have not acknowledged GOD as your Maker, Creator, as the Only One who deserves your worship, your allegiance, let today be the day you do so. He is God – there is no other! He awaits to show Himself on behalf of those who acknowledge Him: “For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.” (2Chron.16:9). Let us trust Him with our lives so that we will experience His love, grace, faithfulness, help and comfort! Let us like David fall on our knees and praise and worship this awesome God, saying “YOU ALONE ARE GOD!”
