“Rejoice greatly,…….your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, humble and mounted on a donkey.” -Zechariah 9:9
The book of Zechariah is filled with imagery and prophecies foretelling the first and second coming of Jesus Christ. Bibles scholars have identified around 122 prophetic statements in this book of 14 Chapters; 31 of them already fulfilled and 91 yet to be fulfilled. The key verse of today portrays the picture of a king riding to His city and it was fulfilled when Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on the colt of a donkey (Matthew 21:2-7). A very powerful message is being conveyed through this. It was written around 540 BC and had accurately prophesied an incident that was to literally happen about five centuries later. Also it was written at a time when the people of Israel returned to Jerusalem after the Babylonian captivity – a time when people were in anguish about the future of their city and country and were looking forward to a powerful leadership to spearhead the re-building of their nation. A stable nation means secure life for its people. At a time when all their dreams were shattered, God sends a ray of hope through His servant Zechariah, to the utterly shattered people that He has not forgotten them and that He has a plan to re-build them and bring them back to their old glory! Today, the same God is speaking to us. He has a plan to build your life; He also has a plan to re-build the lives of some others. Look at the picture of the King – He is coming on a donkey. In those days the donkey was the mount of princes and kings. However, they would not use a donkey when they go for war. So the picture of the king coming on a donkey tells that He is coming in peace. The picture of the coming King (who had literally come) is given as follows:
He is just – therefore He cannot leave sin unpunished, since it is simple justice to punish sin. (V.9)
He is endowed with salvation - He has a plan to help people out of sin and its punishment (V.9)
He is Humble – He does not have the air of the kings of those days, His humility allows Him to be approachable by everyone. (V.9)
He is coming on a donkey – He is the prince (King) of peace. His intention is peace not war. He makes peace between God and man (V.9)
He will abolish enmity (war) and establish peace for everybody (the nations) (V.10)
He will set the prisoners free – because of the blood of covenant (V.11)
Those who return to Him, He declares a double portion of restoration (V.12)
The above picture of the King was fulfilled during the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ. Today He is the risen King and He wants to rule your life. He promises His absolute rule in your life and has proven it while He lived on this earth. So His promises are true. Will you return to Him and invite Him as King to rule in you? His blood is already shed to sign a covenant with you – He comes on a donkey – to make peace between God and you. Will you allow Him? He wants to restore a double portion for you – life on this earth and in heaven – will you allow Him? Your King is coming! - open the gates of your life to receive Him. It is profound in its depth yet simple and pragmatic in its choice- the choice is yours!
Prayer: Dear Jesus, I acknowledge that You are the risen King. Please come and be enthroned in my heart and reign in my life now and always. Amen.
