WHEN GOD FIGHTS YOUR BATTLES!

Saturday, 1 February 2020

Joshua 6 : 1-27

Then the LORD said to Joshua, "See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands…” -Joshua 6:2

The Scripture says in Zephaniah 3:17 that the LORD our GOD is a Mighty Warrior who saves! The battle belongs to the LORD! (1Sam.17:47).

Through the length and breadth of Scripture, we see a God who fights for His people in ways that are incomprehensible to human understanding- He does not need man’s strength or a big army for victory. See how He delivered His people from the hand of the Egyptians (Exodus 14); He got the victory for Gideon using 300 men, trumpets, pitchers and torches (Judges 7); He used David to fight Goliath with a sling and stone( 1Sam.17); He gave victory to Jehoshaphat and his men by confusing the enemy (2 Chron.20)…these are just a few.

Here we have Joshua against the formidable wall of Jericho, their enemy fortified and shut in with no way to conquer according to human standards- but GOD had a plan and it worked to bring down the wall and destroy the enemy! The Lord first ensured Joshua of the victory and gave clear instructions as to how they were to march around the wall of Jericho, 7 days! Wow! What a sight to the enemy who would have derided them for their ‘foolishness.’ “But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise;.” (1Cor.1:27). God worked victory for them in His might not theirs!

The “Jericho walls” of ours – those situations in our lives that seems insurmountable; those battles the enemy fights against us that seem to have no victory - let us learn to win them over:

  1. Listen to the Lord
Joshua listened to and submitted to the instructions of the Lord - as he was told by the Commander of the Lord’s army (Josh. 6:2-5). It involves quietening all our opinions.

We need to be still (be quiet) and wait to see the hand of the LORD working on our behalf: “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” (Exo.14:14)  “...it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.”( Lam.3:26)

  2. Look to the Lord
Joshua did not seek help from anybody else. He was willing to go by the Lord’s ways not what he thought was right- he did not question the Lord’s strategies, but he carried out every instruction as it was given to him. Joshua looked only to the Lord- he trusted the Lord completely.
Let us look to the LORD instead of relying in our strength: “For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.” (Deut.20:4)

  3. Led by the Lord
God’s people obeyed what Joshua instructed them- they were asked to march once around the wall 6 days without uttering anything and then seven times on the 7th day and give a shout once the trumpets were blown. The Ark of the Lord signifying the Lord’s presence went before them. The people didn’t argue why they were asked to do such a thing which might look foolish to others but they obeyed-they were led by the Lord. "I have set the Lord continually before me; because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” (Ps.16:8)

Are you are in the midst of life’s battles? Be sure that the Lord can take up your battles and fight for you! Let’s learn to follow those simple steps to see God’s victory in our struggles and conflicts. “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31).

Think on it:
“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”

Psalm 46:10
