Psalms 7

"My defense is of God, Who saves the upright in heart" -Psalm 7:10

The heading of this Psalm says, 'A meditation of David, which he sang to the Lord concerning the words of Cush, the Benjamite. In other words, here is David again in danger of being slandered by his enemies. Hence as usual, he approaches God with his petition for defense and rescue. His heart completely leans on to God who has proved all through his life, worthy to trust. He addresses God-"O LORD my God, in You I put my trust; Save me from all those who persecute me; And deliver me." (Psalm 7:1)

Persecution/intimidation of the upright is common among men, because we live in a world which is under the wicked one. "... and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one." (1 John 5:19) Persecution comes in different ways- it can be physical, mental or spiritual. Here the psalmist faces the torment of his soul. In verse 2 we see the fierceness of the attack- "Lest they tear me like a lion, Rending me to pieces…" In 1Peter 5:8 we read: "… your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour."  One of the chief weapons the enemy uses against our soul is slander—its nothing but spreading false news about the righteous. This in turn causes tormenting of the soul and it is as fierce as a lion devouring a sheep.

So what shall a righteous man do?

The first thing he has to do is not to counter the lies; instead he has to come to the One who will defend him. As we read in the 1st verse, the Psalmist says- “O LORD my God, in You I put my trust; …” Hand over the case to the Advocate who is above- who sees all, and trust Him! He will plead the case of all who are under His sovereign lordship.

The second thing a believer has to do is recorded in 1Peter 5:8-9. Here Peter gives us the counsel to be sober and vigilant. The word sober means to control yourself, be clear minded and be serious. Or in other words, we should not put our hand in the mouth of the lion. We need to be careful in our daily life and should not give the devil a foothold. Eph. 2:27 NLV says: “Do not let the devil start working in your life.” Even after doing all this, the devil will still be after you. We need to resist the devil and he will flee away. The ground in which you resist the devil is not in your own righteousness but trusting in the blood of Christ Jesus that has cleansed you and made you right with God and the authority God has given to His children!

But we do not lose heart; our defense is from above. As we read in- 1Peter 5:10: "But may God of all grace who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen and settle you."  Glory to God!

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father; I come to You for my defense. In You I put my trust to defend me and shield me from being a prey to the enemy. Strengthen my soul in times of adverse attack of the enemy. In Jesus name. Amen
