Psalms 110
‘The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind: “You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.”’ (Psalm 110:4)
This Psalm is one of a messianic Psalms which speaks prophetically about the Messianic King and Priest- Verse1 speaking about a King and Verse 4, about a Priest. The declaration of this oath is elaborated by the author of Hebrews (Hebrews 7:20- 8:5). The old Priesthood was the Levitical Priesthood through the line of Aaron. In the present prophecy, son of David is brought by God as a King –Priest in Zion in the line of Melchizedek, the king –priest of God in the days of Abraham who received Tithe from Abraham. Here it points to Christ the King– Priest who was appointed to a higher priesthood than the Levitical priests.
How is the Priesthood of Jesus Christ, superior to all priesthood?
-
Jesus is sinless: Hebrews 7: 26 speaks of a High Priest who is “holy, innocent, undefiled, and separated from sinners, …...” No earthly priest could ever say that—they were all sinful, like you and me. But not Christ Jesus! He was tempted but never yielded to the point of sin.
-
Jesus did not offer a sacrifice, but became a Sacrifice: Since He was sinless, Jesus didn’t have to offer sacrifices for Himself, but instead could offer Himself as a sacrifice. He “…does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.”(Heb.7:27) He was different from the Old Testament priests who had to first deal with their sins before they dealt with the sins of others. But Jesus changed all that: Needing no sacrifice for himself, He became a sacrifice in himself; His sacrifice was “once for all.”
-
Jesus was appointed by divine oath: Psalm 110:4: “The LORD has sworn and will not change His mind; Thou art a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” All other priests were appointed by the Law in their weakness, but Jesus Christ was appointed by a divine oath as a perfect Son (Refer Hebrews 7: 28). The oath is spoken to the Messiah. David says, “The Lord said to my Lord (Messiah), sit at my right hand.”(Vs.1) So the final High Priest is Christ Jesus, the Son of God, in the order of Melchizedek, not Levi or Aaron, and this is made by an oath, not by the Law, which is passing away.
-
Jesus Christ’s ministry is forever: The oath “appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever.” (Heb.7:28) Jesus never dies; He never has to be replaced. He has an indestructible life— He will outlive all his foes and will be there for us long after everyone we depend on, is dead.
Jesus Christ, who came into the world as the Son of God, lived a sinless life, offered himself as the Perfect Sacrifice for the sins of people, rose to everlasting life and is seated at the right hand of the majesty of God. He loves us and intercede for us and bids us draw near to God through Him. He did not come to fit into the old system of priestly sacrifices. He came to fulfill them and end them. He is the reality; they were the shadow; when the reality comes, the shadow passes away.
So we can come boldly into the Presence of Jesus Christ as He is the only mediator between man and God who knows us very well and can intercede for us before our Father in Heaven.
Let us Pray: “Almighty God we thank You for giving us a High Priest who knows us very well and understand us and will always be with us forever to guide us. May we always draw near to You through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”
