Throughout the Bible we see death depicted as separation. To die physically is for the soul to be separated from the body.  To die spiritually is for the soul to be separated from God. We must consider the latter with great seriousness as it involves great consequences. What happens when we die? Is it the end?  It is of utmost importance to know and be prepared so we do not lose out on something that is of supreme value.

The Psalmist asks, “What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death?” (Ps 89:48) Clearly the answer is that no such man lives. ‘And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.’ (Hebrews 9:27) The Psalmist in Psalm 31:15 says, “My times are in thy hand” and so are my times, and yours. The whole world is subject to death. Romans 5:12 gives us the reason – By one man sin entered the world, and death by sin, and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.  When Adam disobeyed God, he experienced instant spiritual death and later experienced physical death. But God loved His creation that He gave each one the opportunity to receive eternal life through His Son, Jesus Christ (John 3:16). Jesus experience physical death too. The difference is that Adam died because he was a sinner, and Jesus, who never sinned, chose to die for the sins of all mankind.  Jesus showed His power over death and sin by rising from the dead on the third day. Because of Jesus Christ, death is defeated. 

When we die, the soul immediately goes to heaven or hell. For those that have not accepted Jesus Christ as their Saviour and have not obeyed God or His Word, death brings to an end the chance to accept God’s gift of salvation. For the saved, death brings them into the presence of Christ, ‘to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord’ (2 Corinthians 5:8).   Jesus said, in John 5:28-29: “Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in which all that are in the graves shall hear His voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.”

Death is not the end; it is just the beginning. Be prepared!

• Be sure that you are saved: The only way to be saved is to repent of your sins and commit yourself in faith to Jesus Christ, the crucified, resurrected Son of God, who is coming again.

• Be sure that you are following Christ: Being saved is the foundation on the rock, Jesus Christ and we need to build on the rock. It involves being sure that we honor the Lord in our daily life and steadily growing in the Lord. In Ephesians 4:15 Paul said, “But holding to truth in love, we may grow up into Him in all things, who is the Head, Christ.”

If you have not accepted Christ, now is the time to repent of your sins and by faith to receive Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour. If you are saved but have gone astray in your relationship with Christ and others, confess your sins, rekindle the agape love and make a new start this very hour, while you still have the opportunity. “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” (2 Corinthians 6:2)
