Deuteronomy 32 : 1-21

“Of the Rock who begot you, you are unmindful, and have forgotten the God who fathered you.” -Deuteronomy 32:18

Songs bring a lot of gladness and joy to the hearers, but today we are going to listen to a song that has a warning that if heeded will save people from the coming wrath of God.

Chapter 32 of Deuteronomy is a prophetic song Moses wrote concerning the people of Israel. God knew very well the kind of people he had chosen to love. He knew that once they stepped into the Promised Land these people were bound to forget everything, He had done for them [Deut 31:20-21] thereby bringing upon themselves the curses written down in Deuteronomy 28. Hence Moses was commanded to pen this song (poem) [Deut 31:22] so that when the disaster overtook the people they would remember that God was still in control and would turn back to him.

What are you and I as followers of Christ to learn from our meditation today?  We are warned through these scriptures to refrain from behaving in the same manner thereby escaping the wrath of God. What did the Israelites do that we are called not to repeat?

They forgot who had called them – Their vision of God who had revealed himself to them began to dim in their new place of stay. They never gave Him his due position and authority over their lives and began to replace him with “other gods.” Deu 32:3-4 describe the God who they had rejected. He is no ordinary God but a Great God, a God of Truth and Justice.  Yet how often we replace God for the things/people of this world! We might say we haven’t, but God speaks to us clearly in Rev. 2:4 – “You have forsaken the love you had at first”. Is this true of us? Do we love Him with the same tenacity and passion as when we first met Him? May Paul’s prayer for the Philippian church be our prayer too this morning – “that our love may abound more and more in the knowledge and discernment that we may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ.” (Phil. 1:9)

God had called them as a unique treasured possession of His. They were chosen not because of their greatness but because of God’s love for them. Their turning their backs on God resulted in making them soon forget

  • To Whom they belonged (Deu 32:9)

  • From where God had picked them (Deu 32:10)

  • The Blesser who had blessed them with every good thing (Deu 32:13-15)

We as New Testament believers, we constantly tend to forget:

  • That like them, we were bought at a price and so we cannot be enslaved by the world again (paraphrased 1 Cor.7:23)

  • That many of us were not wise/ worthy or of noble standards when He called us (1 Cor. 1:26), yet he called us because he loved us.

  • That all the blessings we enjoy today in our lives are from above coming down from the Father of Lights, who never changes (James 1:17) – We don’t deserve it, He gives it to us!

Just like the Israelites we are the chosen ones. He chose us, we did not choose him. He first loved us and gave up His life for us. Israel forgot this great choice and soon forsook God who made him (Deut.32:15)
What about us? He gave us His all! Will we reciprocate in the same way?
