THE POWER OF THE WORD OF GOD

Psalms 19
“They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb.”-Psalm 19:10
God gave us His precious Word because He knows it is best for guiding His children in His way. The psalmist describes the Word of God as more precious than gold and sweeter than honey. Let us ponder on this amazing power of the Word by looking into some of its properties.
Refreshes the soul
When it rains on a dry land the heat reduces, and it refreshes the land. Isaiah 55:10-11 says just as the rain flourishes the land and does not return without watering the earth, so does the word of God refresh the soul and does not return void. In referring to the Word as “Seed” Jesus says in Matthew 13:23: “But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.” Again in Matthew 4:4 Jesus speaks of the Word that nourishes us: “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
Gives wisdom
Everyone has certain knowledge but without wisdom one would not be able to use the knowledge that one owns. Solomon could have asked God for material possessions or any other thing that he desired but instead he asked God for wisdom! And God blessed him with wisdom that helped him rule the nation as a great King!
In a world filled with corruption, we need this heavenly wisdom and not wisdom of the world (James 3:13-17). Jesus says in Matthew 7:24 “Everyone who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house upon a rock." The word of God will be the lamp to your feet that guards you through doubts and difficulties and it will be the light in your darkness that guards you from dangers and distress. (Psalms 119:105). Our duty is to seek this wisdom and when we do, our loving Heavenly Father would grant it! Chapter 2 of Proverbs outlines the moral benefits of wisdom; God delights to give wisdom to those who truly seek it!
Gives joy to the heart
When we dwell in the word of God it would open our eyes to truly understand His greatness! (Luke 24:31) We worship a risen, living King who conquered death! No matter what our circumstances maybe, we should start seeing our difficulties through God’s perspective. When men say “Impossible” God says, “It is possible!” Even through difficult times we will be able to rejoice in the Lord always. “Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob; whose hope is in the Lord their God.” (Psalm 146:5) Again in John 15:11 Jesus says “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you and your joy may be full.”
Gives Light to the eyes
Psalm 19:8 says “the commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.” Our inner eyes are opened to discern right and wrong. What do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? (2 Corinthians 6:14). Children of God are expected to walk in light and not to equally yoke with the world. The word of God will keep you aligned with what God desires of you.
Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” May we align our lives to God’s Word and reap its benefits!
Prayer: O Heavenly Father, help us to grow in the knowledge of Your word so that we may lead a life pleasing in Your sight. In Jesus name, Amen.
