Chapter 9 of the Gospel of John gives us a vivid description of how a blind man (from birth) receives his miraculous sight through Jesus Christ. Though the chapter begins with him receiving his physical sight, it ends with him receiving his spiritual sight as well. The key verse is his testimony!

The blind man initially received physical healing but later realized that the One who healed him was the Son of God and he believed in Him and worshiped Him (John 9:35-38). His spiritual eyes too, were opened- a greater miracle than receiving his physical sight! While the teachers of the Law were blinded by pride and presumption, his life was lighted by the Light of the world!

Jesus said in Matthew 6:22, “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light.” What does this mean? It is with the eyes that we perceive things which affect us in the way we see life and live it. Hence a “good” eye will light our life well, just as a “bad” eye will engulf us in darkness! We have a choice to perceive “good” things that lead to godliness or bad things that lead to ungodliness.

The Scripture is very clear in 2 Corinthians 4:4 that the god of this age has blinded the eyes of unbelievers so that the light of the gospel does not penetrate into them. Following the course of this world, they are blinded by ambition, name, fame, pleasures, and the temporal things so that they are unable to see the eternal things-that which last after their short span of life gets over on the earth. They try to be conformed to the standards of this world which they unwittingly think will last.  The pursuit of the temporal while ignoring the eternal will result in great loss when one’s life ends. What does the Bible have to say about this? “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.  For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” (1 John 2:15-17).

 

Can this be a checkpoint for each of us reading this toady? Are we groping in darkness, pursuing the temporal for momentary satisfaction or are we walking in “the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2Cor.4:6)?

If your life is still full of the darkness of this world, its time you turned your life over to Christ- He will illumine your life with His light and lead you in the path of eternal life! “He who believes in the Son [Jesus Christ] has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” (John 3:36). Dear friend, where is your life headed to? Give thought to your ways and seek the LORD first so that your life will recieve His light!
