Exodus 12 : 1-20

“Now the blood shall be a sign for you …. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you…” Exodus 12:13

The institution of the First Passover for the people of Israel is described in our reading today.  This Feast’s significance is underlined in the Lord’s command to keep it for generations as an everlasting ordinance (Exo 12:14). If we study the passage carefully, we will understand the implication it has for the believer today.

We will look into 2 important symbols in this passage that hold meaning for us:

  • The Lamb without blemish (Exo 12:5): is a pointer to the “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29)- Christ Jesus Himself! He is the spotless Lamb of God without any blemish of sin (1 Peter 1:19) so that He could become the perfect sacrifice for the sin of all mankind.

Sinful man cannot be made right with a holy God unless his sin is atoned for; no amount of righteous deeds done by man can ever bring perfection according to God’s standard. Hence Jesus Christ Himself, the Son of God who came into this world as a man, who lived a sinless life, took the place of sinful man in atoning man’s sin through His death- so that we could be made right with God.

  • The blood of the Lamb (Exo 12:7): is a pointer to the shed blood of Christ on the cross when He was crucified. God’s principle for atoning for one’s life is given in Leviticus 17:10: “For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life.” But the blood of animals sacrificed year after year, was only temporary atonement for sin but the sacrifice of Christ once and for all perfects one who is being made holy (Hebrews10:14)

The blood of Christ only can cleanse us even from the guilt of sin: “How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!” (Hebrews 9:14)

How shall we apply these precepts? If you have not yet received Christ Jesus into your life as your perfect redemption from sin, may the Word bring a significant change into your life. Remember the Israelites were asked to apply the blood of the lamb on the lintels of their doors so that when the destroyer of death would come, it would “pass over” their homes that they would not be killed. Similarly, today may the sign of the blood of the Lamb of God be a sign on you that God will pass over in His wrath not destroying one who is covered by the blood of His Son. John 3:36 says, “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.”

The great question before us today is: Will you be among the great multitude from every nation, tribe, people and language standing before the throne of the Lamb who “have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.” (Revelation 7:14)

Prayer:

LORD Jesus, thank You for taking my place in redeeming

sacrifice that I would not be destroyed but receive eternal life through You.

May Your blood wash me clean from all sin that I may

live and serve You all the days of my life till eternity.

Amen.
