Today’s reading is a Royal Psalm written by Solomon, the son of David.  The Royal Psalm emphasizes God as King, often using the words “The LORD reigns!”  These Psalms speak of His rule as Creator, as Savior of Israel, and as the coming One.  The Royal psalms often point to the coming rule of the Savior King, the Lord Jesus. The future rule of Messiah is referred in the following verses:

• A rule of justice (Psa 72:1-4)

• A reign of righteousness (Psa 72:5-7)

• The reign of Messiah over all the earth (Psa 72:8-11)

• A reign of compassion and deliverance (Psa 72:12-14)

• A reign of great blessing and peace (Psa 72:15-17)

• Praises to God who establishes this glorious reign (Psa 72:18-20)

 

We see in Psa 72:18-19: “Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel… And blessed be His glorious name forever…” What wonderful words of blessing towards the end of the psalm. God’s glory means the visible beauty of his holiness.  It is something that God alone possesses; it tells us how perfect He is! We cannot increase it or reproduce the same! It tells us what God is and it is not controlled by anything from outside. It tells us of God’s invaluable worth and value.

 

Isaiah 6:3 says that the angels are singing, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God almighty” - followed by - “The whole earth is full of his glory.” Here the Author doesn’t say holiness, but glory.  To say the word ‘holy’ twice in Hebrew is to describe someone as “most holy.”  To say the word three times takes the idea to the highest level.  In other words, holiness of God cannot be described in human language.  To be holy means to be different, distant, or above all.  Thus, the song of the seraphim is a constant reminder that the holiness of God is indescribable.  Although the Lord is totally different from us, in His mercy, He still reaches down to take care of us.

 

“The whole earth is full of His glory”: In Hebrew, the order of these words will read like this: “The fullness of all the earth is His glory.” In Psalm 113:4-6 we can see that the glory of God is far bigger than the universe; however, Psa 72:6 emphasizes God’s closeness to His creation – His involvement with the earth and His people.

We see it practically, when God came in flesh in fulfillment of the prophecy that a virgin shall conceive and his name would be ‘Immanuel’—“God with us.”  The birth of Jesus was the sign of God’s salvation to mankind, He showed His love in action. The heaven came down and His glory shone around mankind.  How precious is God’s love and care towards man! God once told Moses that, “You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me and live.”  And the Lord said, “here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on that rock.  So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by.  Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen.” (Exodus 33:20-23).

 

The Rock that was cleft points to Christ crucified, the Word became flesh and we are the witness of His glory. Let us respond to the glory of God by living a life that will match His divine call, being a witness for Him.
