Colossians 2 : 1-15
“Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.” -Colossians 2:6-7
Written to a church that was infiltrated with heresies of false teachers, the Epistles to the Colossians was written by the Apostle Paul to refute wrong teachings and root the believers in Colossae in Christ Jesus. Living in the end times, when false teachings and false messiahs are on the rise, we need to apply and hold on to the timeless truths of Colossians in our lives.
Our Position: We begin a beautiful journey with Him when we receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour of our lives and become children of God (John 1:12; Romans 8:16). We are a new creation in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), redeemed by His precious blood from the bondage of sin and darkness and brought into His marvellous light. In Christ we have been given victory over sin and are seated with Christ in the heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6). We are made complete in our union with Christ. Know your position and wield your authority as ambassadors of Christ!
Our Priority: The preeminence of Christ is a major theme of this epistle. Paul reminds us that Jesus Christ is the perfect revelation of God, the Creator and Sustainer, who came to earth in human form to suffer and die on our behalf and in His resurrection, reinstate us to the Heavenly Father and give us victory over sin and death.
Christ should be the prime focus not just of the Church, but He should be the first priority in every aspect of our daily lives. When people look at us, do they see the character of Christ? Can we live a life that declares, "I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.” (Gal 2:20)?
Our Progression: When our position and priority are aligned with Christ, there needs to be a progressive Christian walk of faith.
-
Walk in Him: Our daily walk with the Lord requires submission and obedience to His Word – a obedience that arises out of love for the Lord. We ought to walk in the same manner as Christ walked (1 John 2:6) "I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)
-
Be Rooted and Built Up in Him: The metaphor of “rooted” indicate a deep abiding relationship with Christ, drawing nourishment from God’s Word and continually being built up and established in faith. The deeper the roots, the stronger will be the foundation and unshakable the faith, no matter what fiery trial may come our way. Our lives will be like the seed that fell on good soil and produced multi-fold fruit (Matthew 13:3-9) and like the house built on a rock, that withstood every storm (Matthew 7:24-27).
-
Heart of Gratitude: Anyone who has truly experienced the mercy and grace of God, can only worship Him with a heart overflowing with gratitude and love. Joy – the fruit of the Spirit is an expression of contentment and thanksgiving, despite our struggles and trials, knowing and resting in God who is in absolute control. Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! (Philippians 4:4)
Our lives as believers should be a continual steadfast and steady journey, till He comes or calls us home.
Make it your Prayer: “I bow my knees before the Father, … that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, … and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:14-18)
