King David’s earnest prayer and supplication to the God of heaven is at the centre of this Psalm. The preparations as he approaches the Lord and also the confidence he proclaims is seen here. Let’s look into it:

Praying and approaching the Lord (Ps 5:1-3): A wonderful pattern of prayer is visible through these three verses, such as-

 

• Requests to hear his prayers and consider his meditation (Ps 5:1)

• Requests God’s attention for help (Ps 5:2)

​

• Knowing to Whom he was praying (Ps 5:2)

​​

• Complete dependency upon Lord (Ps 5:2)

​

• Confident that the prayers are heard by the Lord (Ps 5:3)

 

• Prioritising prayer (Ps 5:3)

​

• Awaiting His answers expectantly (Ps 5:3)

​

We notice the time of prayer by the servant of God - in the morning. There are several references in the word of God the morning time segregated for prayer (Psalms 63:1, 88:13, 119:147). We can see our Master, Jesus also went early in the morning to pray (Mark 1:35). If we go through the lives of many servants of God – whom God used mightily, they spent quality time in prayer especially in the early morning. In our day when we are caught in a tight scheduled life style and counting our time in seconds and schedules, we must examine ourselves whether we are lacking the quality time with the Lord?  If we are not spending personal time with Him on this earth, how can we spend the whole eternity with HIM?

This is not to emphasise that you can pray only in the morning – No! – God would really like to speak to each of us— its not just us speaking always, God also wants to communicate to us. Those who eagerly and expectantly wait for Him, can hear His voice:  “My sheep hear my voice…”  (John10:27)

​

Confidently approaching the Lord: “But as for me, I will come into your house in the multitude of your mercy: and in your fear will I worship toward your holy temple.”  (Ps 5:7) The servant of God enters and worships towards His Holy temple by His abundance of grace with a reverential mind. When we look into the Tabernacle/temple- we see lots of restrictions- nobody except High Priest could enter into the Most Holy Place once in a year with blood. In those time most of the people couldn’t get the great privilege to keep a personal relationship with God. (Hebrews 9 explains it well).

Today- for a child of God, in His mercy he has given us the sonship (Rom.8:15) and granted permission to come near to the throne of Grace any time through Jesus Christ. (Heb.4:14-16) Are we using it wisely? Or giving importance to perishable things?  “…but few things are needed--or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better and it will not be taken away from her."  (Luke.10:42)

Effect of the preparations in approaching the Lord (Ps 5:11-12): The cries now become joy and moreover-

 

• Lord will cover them with His shield.

 

• Lord will bless them
   

• The trust in God has been increased
   

• They will not fear because God is their defender
   

• They love God and His name
   

• They will be righteous
   

 

Today - the blessing for God’s children through Jesus Christ is much more than what is stated here.
