Psalms 19

“The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul;... Moreover by them Your servant is warned, and in keeping them there is great reward.” Psalm 19:7,11

Gazing at the beauty and splendor of God’s amazing artistry displayed in His creation, David so poetically and poignantly describes it in the first few lines of Psalm 19. The heavens do not fail a single day to proclaim the glory of God: “there is no speech or language where their voice is not heard.” (Psa 19:3); they do not miss to make a mark in all of the earth, proclaiming the great work of the Creator’s hands!

David understands its just not enough to admire God’s wonderful works but His wonderful Word, the excellence of which he describes in Psa 19:7-11.

The Law/Statutes of the Lord are: *Perfect   * Sure   *Right   *Radiant  *True & Righteous  *More precious than gold * Sweeter than honey

What are the benefits of His Word? :   *converts the soul  *makes the simple wise  *rejoicing  the heart  *Enlightens the eyes   *one is warned and rewarded in keeping them.

  • Converting the soul: The first and foremost aspect of our life is being saved, receiving eternal life in Christ Jesus. Romans 10:8,9 says, the Word which is near you and in your heart is the word of faith that helps you confess “Jesus is Lord!’ 1 Peter 1:23 says, “for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God.”

  • Making wise the simple: Psalm 119:130 says, “The entrance of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.” All the wisdom of the world put together cannot make one wise unless he seeks it from the Word of God.

  • Rejoicing the heart: The Psalmist himself says in Ps.119:24, “Your testimonies also are my delight…” Jeremiah 15:16 says, "Your words were found and I ate them, and Your words became for me a joy and the delight of my heart; for I have been called by Your name, O LORD God of hosts.” God’s Word makes the heart rejoice even in difficult times!

  • Enlightens the eyes: We get insight for living from God’s Word. The Psalmist says, “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Ps.119:105). “For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching is light; And reproofs for discipline are the way of life” (Prov.6:23)

  • One is warned: James 1:22-23 refers to the Word of God as a mirror that shows, how a man “looks like on the inside”; it cannot help him if he does not do anything about it; but “he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.” (James 1:25)

The Psalmist then turns to look within himself (Psa 19:12-14) and understands that like any other human being, he is not free from errors or faults- he earnestly asks the LORD to keep him from willful sins. Can we too look at ourselves through God’s Word and see how we are? As the mirror of His Word shows us how we look, let us cleanse ourselves in Christ’s precious blood so that we may declare the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light! (1 Peter 2:9)!

Shall we then pray like David did?  “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.”

Thought for the Day:

“To know the Word of God, to live the Word of God, to preach the Word, to teach the Word, is the sum of all wisdom, the heart of all Christian service."

~Charles E. Fuller
