Daniel 6 : 1-28

Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before. -Daniel 6: 10

There is a thrill to the story of ‘Daniel in the Lion’s Den’ when we see the mighty hand of God delivering His faithful servant from the mouth of the lions. Daniel is an example of a man of God who stood firm for his God and his faith that in the toughest of circumstances, God showed up to deliver him, through which the Almighty was glorified.

The Book of Daniel testifies to this: kings and kingdoms may come and go but God the Eternal One remains! Daniel served his term in the reign of several kings, but God kept His servant in favour in each of their reign. Great and marvelous are the ways of God!

As the story unfolds, we have a few key things to learn:

  • God’s favour rested on Daniel which brought him the king’s favour: Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom (Dan.6:3).

  • Daniel’s exceptional qualities of diligence, trustworthiness, anti-corruption in his workplace are for us to follow (Dan.6:4) in a world where these values are ebbing away.

  • The trap to make Daniel fall, aroused by the jealousy of his co-workers backfired on them such that not just themselves but their families were fed to the lions (Dan.6:24). The lesson learnt: If you set a trap for others, you will get caught in it yourself. If you roll a boulder down on others, it will crush you instead. (Prov.26:27).

  • The bold declaration of the king to all the peoples of the world that the God of Daniel is the living God and His kingdom will not be destroyed, is an example of how God can use even a pagan king to MAKE KNOWN HIS NAME to the ends of the earth! (Dan.6:25-28).

Yet for our thought today is Daniel, the man of prayer!  The Living Bible says, “…he went home and knelt down as usual.” Psalm 55:17 TLB says: “I will pray morning, noon, and night, pleading aloud with God; and he will hear and answer.” The habit of prayer that was so much a part of Daniel’s life stood him in good stead even in the toughest of times! He knew his source of help is from the Maker of heaven and earth (Ps.121:2).

Daniel had experienced how God delivered him before and He would do the same thing even now. Such ardent trust in God and his faith that no matter what the circumstance God is able to rescue, helped Daniel brave the lion’s den and come out without even a scratch to his skin!!!

Friend, what is the lion’s den you are confronting today? Have you given up hope that there is no escape and that no one can save you from such a perilous situation? Take heart- the living God who rescued Daniel out of the lions’ mouth is the same God who is mighty to save! …do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God (Phil.4:6). The LORD is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth. (Ps.145:18).

Remember: There is no situation that is too hard for the Lord that He cannot deliver!
