Song of Solomon 7 : 1-13

“Come, my beloved, Let us go forth to the field; Let us lodge in the villages.” Song 7:11

Song of Songs is a beautiful song in the middle of the Bible which describes the beauty of love and the ways in which it is expressed between lovers, guarded by their mutual commitment in marriage. Layers of meaning are underlying this poem. At first it is simply expressing two lovers married and committed together and the expression of their love. It magnifies the way in which God sees marriage and the sacredness of it. On the other hand it has shown us the love between Christ and His bride the Church. So this love expression shows the heavenly blossoms and fragrances expressed to the divine lover the Church universal. The spiraling tentacles of love in its divine form reach the upper most portions of heaven where her lover is seated. At every layer of meaning one thing stands out- Agape Love.

His bride the Church.

Bride welcomes her lover to the field in the villages. She wants to show forth her affection by calling the attention of her lover to the blossoms and the blooms that await them in the field. Also the fruits of all manners new and old are laid before the heavenly lover of her soul for Him to relish and cherish.

Our heavenly lover- the Lord of Church wants to see His church reaching out in the unheard villages shod with the shoes of gospel. How beautiful are your feet in sandals, O prince’s daughter! (Son 7:1). He loves to see the blossom and budding, of the labor of the Church. Every new believer added to the fold should mature in the garden to produce all sorts of fruit. The bride knows this and that is why she is welcoming her lover to the field. Come, my beloved, Let us go forth to the field; Let us lodge in the villages. (Son 7:11)

See how this pleases the lover to see the blooms, the blossoms, the budded branches and the fruits. We are reminded here of the fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22-23: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control…. & the new souls added to the kingdom by the labor of Love of  the church. One of the ways in which the church expresses her love towards the beloved Lord is like this. It is not only through worship and beautiful services but by new budding in the unheard villages, the fruits of souls in far off places where the princess has to tread herself.

Jesus, the Beloved of the Church is seeing His church with such a fond love towards her. Every expression of description suits such an allegory. The language is so mingled with beauty and love it goes hand in hand. The beauty expressed here are not outward but the inward beauty of the Church. For example: Your navel is a rounded goblet; It lacks no blended beverage. Your waist is a heap of wheat Set about with lilies. (Son 7:2)Here we see how Jesus wants his church to be seen. “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” (John 7:38)

“His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn;…” (Matt. 3:12).

Thought: Let us labor to bring this harvest which pleases our Lord and let us welcome Him to the show Him the fruit of this labor of love!
