Luke 8 : 26-39

“Return to your own house, and tell what great things God has done for you.” – Luke 8:39

In today’s reading, Jesus goes to a place called Gadarenes where He meets with a man who was demon possessed for a long time and sets Him free from his bondage. To proclaim liberty to the captives and the oppressed was part of Jesus mission statement (Luke 4:18-19) that He made when He started His ministry.

An important thing to note here is that even the demons, the number one enemy of mankind, knew who Jesus Christ was and that they would be dealt with by Christ. The devil spoke through the man: “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?” (Luke 8:28) This is something that every Christian should think about: if your enemy, the devil, knows Christ, His honor, His name and His Father, that leaves a very big question to all who confess to be Christians and believe in Him as their Messiah—dear brethren the question is: Do you know who Jesus Christ is? It seems the devil “knows and speaks” about Jesus; so what is the difference? Galatians 2:20 says; “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me” this means we should have Jesus Christ in our hearts,  not just profess Christ through our lips or see the Christ on the Cross—He should be in our hearts, living inside us! It is not just a superficial belief but the confession of Christ as the Lord and Saviour of our lives! It is to believe that He came to rescue us from sin and set us free!

When we have Jesus Christ in us, He will not lead us into temptations and will deliver us from evil (Matthew 6:13). When we have Jesus Christ in us, He will help us to be sober to know that our adversary the devil goes about seeking Christians to destroy (1 Peter 5:8)

We read in Luke 8:29 that Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man and it came out and he was rescued from its captivity. What a tremendous manifestation of the power of God! The demon possessed man is now set free completely (Luke 8:35). His desire was to be with Jesus, but see what Jesus instructed him to do as we read in our key verse! Jesus asked the man to go and describe what God has done for him! Each of us has a duty to go and proclaim to the world the same thing!! We see in Luke 8:39 the testimony of this man. Remember when we testify about Jesus Christ, we glorify His name.  A testimony is a powerful tool in our Christian lives, because by testifying Christ we are sharing the Gospel to unbelievers who are listening.

Testimonies impact lives. When parents have a testimony before their children their lives are influenced!  Testimonies encourage other Christians to be strong in their faith especially the new believers. This is a command from Christ Himself: “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)- it is to go to your people, community, country and the nations and testify what God has done for you. Remember He has given you eternal life which you didn’t deserve!

Though the people of that place asked Jesus to leave their land, the testimony of that man might have touched many and opened the eyes of many! If you have been rescued by Christ from your sins and set free from the power of the devil, let your life be a testimony for Jesus Christ.

Christ Jesus said:

“The thief comes only in order to steal, kill, and destroy.

I have come in order that you might have life

-life in all its fullness.”

John 10:10 GNT
