Job is the first of the poetic books in the Bible. The purpose of this book is to demonstrate God's sovereignty and the meaning of true faith; it delves into a deeper understanding of God. It addresses the question, "Why do the righteous suffer?" This book also gives us insights into the work of Satan.

           Today’s text is part of Job’s ninth and last reply to his friends which continues until chapter 31. Job describes the mighty matters and glorious works/things of God. He begins with the lower parts of the Creation and gradually speaks about the mysteries or the superior things which are hidden from the normal eyes of mankind. In this portion he speaks of fifteen works of God (Job 26:5-13).  He then concludes with an inference saying we know very little about God and His ways; it’s not fully displayed or known to any mortal creature. 

Let’s look into the statement Job makes in the key verse: 

How small a whisper we hear of Him! - After stating the great Mysteries of God (Job 26:2-13) Job tells that these are the mere edges of His ways – or in other words, from such a vast arena of His works, so tiny is the understanding we have about Him. It shows how little was known of God (yet great revelation Job received) in the days when men had no complete revelation of Him as we have in the Bible now. Those who have questions about God— if only they open their eyes and look around them- that is sufficient to speak to them the marvelous thing about His handiwork. Psalm19 describes this aspect.  From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the LORD is to be praised (Ps113:3). It is regrettable that even with such a revelation many still look on God as a mystery beyond all human comprehension.

The thunder of His power who can understand? - The thunder of His power is in contrast to the faint whisper! The idea is, whatever He has made known to us of Himself, is nothing compared to the glorious reality of His person. The comparison is between the gentlest whisper and words fully spoken loud and clear. God is all-wise and all-powerful. His will is perfect, yet we do not always understand His ways.

For a child of God today, through Jesus Christ we receive much more revelation which were hidden in the ages (Heb.1:1-2, Col.1:26-27). After knowing all the Word and receiving the heavenly blessings through Christ, many times we struggle before difficult circumstances; others turn desperate when wicked people around them prosper. Never envy the wicked! … Trust in the Lord instead. Be kind and good to others; …. (Psalm.37:1-3). In the life of Job, we see later that God spoke to him, showing him his great power and wisdom. Then Job says: “I had only heard about you before, but now I have seen you with my own eyes.” (Job 42:5NLT). 

Let us pray that God opens our eyes of understanding about Him, so that we may hold on to Him always in any situation. The Holy Spirit, the counsellor, helps us to walk closely with Him every day.  Always remember He is never insensitive to our suffering. Because God is sufficient, we must hold on to Him. We must remember that this life, with all its pain and suffering is not our final destiny. He is preparing a place for us and soon He will come and take us to that promised place!

Meditate on 1Cor.2:7-10   “….these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.”
