Today’s reading portion deals with the theme of Christian generosity which confirms our profession of the Gospel. The Corinthian Christians were concerned and wanted to help in “supplying the needs of God’s people” (2 Cor 9:12).  Their generosity was seen “in sharing with them and with everyone else” (2 Cor 9:13). Paul noticed the concern of these people not just for the poor Christians living in Judea but also ‘with everyone else’ in need without any partiality. 

All Christian kindness, sacrifice, energy and love is a result of God’s sovereign grace. 2 Cor 9:14 says the reason for this Gentile concern for Jewish suffering was because of the surpassing grace God has given which is the indescribable gift to be thanked for. 

This gift of Grace is indescribable because of:  

The One who gave it: The living God in whom is no beginning and no end; the One who in the beginning created the heavens and the earth; the One who upholds and sustains every living thing so that in Him we live and move and have our being, in whose hands is our very breath; the Holy One before whom the seraphim hide their eyes and cover their feet and cry Holy! Holy! Holy. It is this God who has given His surpassing grace to sinners.

Him who brought it, the eternal Son of God: The second person of the Trinity, the one who is absolutely equal to the Father and the Spirit in his being and perfections. The one who created all things, for without Him nothing was made was made, the one and only begotten Son of the Father. 

What it cost Him for us to receive this salvation:  The Son had to humble himself to death, even the death of the cross, because without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin. God imputed our sin on Him who knew no sin. He bore our sins in his own body on the tree so that we would be free from sin.

What it will do: This gift of grace gives us a new heart and makes us a new creation. Indeed, it makes all things new. It is a gift which freely justifies us, imputing on us the righteousness of Christ Jesus himself. This gift adopts us into the family of God and makes us His own sons and heirs, joint-heirs with Jesus Christ. This gift ends the dominion of sin over our lives.  This gift is Christ’s lordship and His shepherding love over us, keeping us in His care all our days. This gift joins us to Him, putting us in Christ and putting Christ in us. We receive his life flowing through us, longing to please Him in every way and the strength to do so. This grace seals us until that great day when we stand before Him and then we shall be like Him. This gift of grace will present us spotless to Him on that day.

With wonder, Paul exclaims: “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” The possession of this gift of grace shows itself in a willingness and determination to serve and love others who also have been receivers of the same grace.

A Promise: “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, 
that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, 
may have an abundance for every good work.”
(2Corinthians 9:8)
