Psalms 118

“Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!” -Psalm 118:1

“GOD is good!”- a call to praise the Living One, to give thanks to Him, to remember His goodness in our lives- this is what this Psalm stirs in us! Though it may have been used for corporate worship, let us see how it can personally minister to us.

A few gleanings from the Psalm itself why give thanks to the LORD:

  • HIS Mercy endures forever (Ps 118:1,29)- Its His great mercy and love that sought us and bought us with His blood to be His very own treasured possession! Remember its because of His great mercy we are not consumed (Lam.3:22). His love covers over a multitude of our sins! Shouldn’t our hearts be filled with praise for such love and mercy towards us?

  • HE has answered my prayers (Ps 118:5,21)-The Psalmist tells of God’s help in his day of distress. How about you? If we were to recount the instances of answered prayers when we cried out to Him, there would be plenty! In fact, see how He has delivered us from the near edges of death and brought us to a broad place! O give thanks!

  • HE can be trusted above man (Ps 118:8-9): Many times we find that vain is the help of man (Ps.60:11); many are the promises of men and princes but most often can’t be relied on. Ps. 41:9 “Even my close friend, someone I trusted,… has turned against me.” But, THE LORD NEVER FAILS! He won’t leave or forsake you! (Heb.13:5)

  • HE gives me victory over the enemy (Ps 118:10-14): The nation of Israel as well as David can confidently recount the many instances of God’s deliverance for them from their enemies. The Lord’s right hand working, with His miraculous deeds on their behalf are etched in their history. Let us too thank the Lord for His many victories in our lives over the many enemies that tried to bring fear, doubt, to drown us in trouble- remember the mighty hand of the Lord that delivered you!

  • HE disciplines to make me better (Ps 118:17-18): Chastening by our Heavenly Father is to make us better children- “For whom the Lord loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.” (Heb.12:6). Some painful experiences in life are the Lord’s discipline to correct and mature as His children. When we look back at those fiery “crucible” experiences, we can thank God for the better person you and I are today.

  • HE has given me Light (Ps 118:27): More than the light of His guidance when we were groping in the dark and the light of His countenance that gave us peace (Num.6:26), Jesus is the Light of the world! He said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." (John 8:12). “In Him was life, and the life was the light of mankind.” (John 1:4).

Has His light flooded your life so that the light of life is in you? If not, would you ask Him?

Dear brothers and sisters, Give thanks to the Lord for He is good! Let our hearts bubble with His joy and let us bring delight to Him with our offering of praise and thanks!

Thought for the Day:

“Gratitude is an offering precious in the sight of God,

and it is one that the poorest of us can make and not be poorer

but richer for having made it.”
