Song 2 : 1-17

“Like an apple tree among the trees of the woods, So is my beloved among the sons. I sat down in his shade with great delight, And his fruit was sweet to my taste.” -Songs 2:3 [NKJV]

Song of Songs is such a poetically pleasing book which allegorically explains the love and union between -Christ and His Bride the Church. As we enter into this book with these two main characters in our mind, we will be able to find the spiritual depth of this small book, which is otherwise thought as obscure and sensual by many. So let us with this thought in mind try to understand today's reading.

In chapter two we have the following outline: "Christ speaks of himself and his church, Song 2:1, Song 2:2. The church declares the delightful fellowship she had with Christ, Song 2:3, Song 2:4. Rejoices in his favour, and takes care that nothing may displease him, Song 2:5-7. Triumphs in his love and gracious call, Song 2:8-13. Christ’s care of the church, Song 2:14, Song 2:15. Her faith and hope in him, Song 2:16, Songs 2:17". (Joseph Benson's commentary on the Old & New Testament)

The Lord is compared here as an apple tree among the woods. How lovely and astonishing to think that our God almighty would stoop down to such a state to be among us the sinners! But He did this in love for us. His love and the depth of it is unsearchable. Philippians 2:6-7 NKJV “… who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God,  but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.”

He sat among men as one ordinary person like any one of us. He could not be distinguished otherwise. It was such a lowly state that nobody recognized Him from outside. His own did not receive Him, but all those who received Him, He gave them right to become sons of God almighty. What a great privilege the church has! This is marvelous.

As we sit under this Apple tree and eat of its fruit (The Grace) that is for us to taste on a daily basis, we will be transformed into His likeness and glorious character. Christian Character is developed by the working of Christ in us. It is not an outward but inward working grace that makes us to be transformed into His likeness, which is well pleasing in His sight. He is ready to bestow His grace to all who are ready to eat this fruit of His grace. His grace is sufficient for us. It nourishes us and builds us up into His love and character. Let us strive daily to eat of this apple tree- The Lord; and grow in grace and knowledge of Him. 2 Peter 3:18 NKJV: “…but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.”

Prayer:

Dear Lord Jesus, help me daily to sit under Your shadow and eat of you so that I will become like you and grow daily in your grace. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
