John 1 : 1-18
“For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace.” -John 1:16[NASB]
The Gospel of John makes a grand introduction to Jesus Christ, setting the stage to make Him known to the world for “all who the Son is!” John 1:16 [CEV] reads: “Because of all that the Son is, we have been given one blessing after another.” And out of Christ’s fullness we been graciously blessed!
What stands out in ‘the Person of Christ’ from our reading today?
-
Jesus the Eternal Word(Vs.1&2,10)- Jesus is equated with the Word that at the beginning with God. This proves His existence from eternity past. In declaring the Word was God, John proves the deity of Jesus. In stating Jesus, being with God, and being God points to the fact that He is God; yet separate in His entity as a Person! In His being the Word, His role at the beginning of creation is seen—the Spoken Word through whom all things came into being! Colossians 1:16 says: “For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.”
-
Jesus the Eternal Life(V4,)- In Him was life! He is the Source of life! Jesus said in John 14: 6 that “I am…the Life”– life comes from Him! Without Him we cannot exist- “for in Him we live and move and have our being…” (Acts 17:28). Our sustenance in Him is both for the physical and the spiritual. When Jesus said in John 6:35, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” –He was referring to Himself as being the Bread of heaven who gives eternal life through Him; the manna which the Israelites ate in the wilderness was for their daily sustenance, but Jesus the Bread of life gives eternal life that never perishes!
-
Jesus the Eternal Light(Vs.4,9)- Jesus is referred here as the “Light of men.” Light brings in illumination in a dark place. Jesus the Light entering this dark fallen world brought us the revelation of who God is. 4:6 says, “For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” Jesus the true light reveals God to man drawing them to God through Himself.
-
Jesus the Eternal Truth(V14): Jesus said I am the Truth (John 14:6)- He is the source of the Truth about God. He told Philip the disciple, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father…”(John 14:9)- this in in connection with revealing who God really is. If there is a truth that can set man free from his sin and bondage, it’s the truth found in Jesus Christ and His Word! Jesus’ life matched the words He spoke! The Gospels reveal the truth that He spoke, when He the “Word” became flesh and “tabernacled” among us, full of grace and truth!(vs.14)
The question before us today is what have we done with the revealed truth of God’s Word today? From the fullness of His grace, He offers all that He is to you and me– what do we do with Him? Ignore? OR Accept all that He is and receive one blessing after another from His grace? The choice that can make all the difference!
Think/Act on: Will you invite Jesus to be the centre of your life?
