Galatians 5 : 1-26

“So I tell you: Live by following the Spirit. Then you will not do what your sinful selves want.” -Galatians 5:16 [NCV]

A person called to live in the newness of life in Christ Jesus must learn to live under the influence of the Holy Spirit. Believers who can rely and experience this walk in the Spirit will reap its benefits in their life. The power and hope this truth brings to a believer helps him/her lead a victorious Christian life.

According to Bible, there are two types of birth for every person. John 3:6 says, “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” Anyone who is born into this earth of is born of the flesh meaning, they are people born of natural descent. But those who have received Jesus Christ into their life and believed in His name, are given the right to become the children of God (John 1:12).

Those who are born of the flesh, try to please God by obeying the Law (commandments)—that is—by their works and with their own strength. They cannot please God by their good works, as the sinful nature in them still stimulates sin, though the Law reveals it to them as sin. So there is this misery in every man by which he cannot obey the Law by his own willpower but he constantly fails. There is an inward cry in him: “Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?” Here is the victory: “Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Ref: Romans 8:24, 25 NLT). So those who are born of the Spirit can be victorious through Christ Jesus.

Those who accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour and believe that God has raised them from death they are saved (Romans 10 :9-10). They are supposed to walk according to the Spirit, as the Holy Spirit dwells in them, and not according to their sinful nature. But it is each person’s personal decision to submit to be led by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will reveal more about Jesus and His love for us. The indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit produces Christian virtues in a child of God. Besides, the Spirit of God will enable us to obey our Lord Jesus, out of love. Hence a child of God will hate evil and the works of the flesh; instead when yielded to Him, the Holy Spirit will produce much fruit in our lives as given in Galatians 5:22-23: namely, love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Hence, we have to learn to live by the Spirit so that we will not indulge in the desires of the sinful nature.  Then God will be pleased in us and hence we can inherit the Kingdom of God.

Prayer:

Almighty God our Father, fill us with the immense presence of Your Spirit in our lives so that we will live a life holy and pleasing to You O God; we ask this in the precious name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
