Psalms 16

“I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” -Psalm 16: 8

This Psalm was penned by David during one of his most difficult times in life, probably when his very life was in danger. In as much as the Psalm conveys David’s great confidence in God at a crucial point in his life, it also points prophetically to Christ Jesus and particularly His resurrection from the dead.

A quick look at our lives at some point when the days seemed dark and we couldn’t see a single ray of hope, were we able to put our trust in our Lord as David did? May be you have been through a financial crisis, a deadly disease, an emotional burden of a broken relationship, a situation of mistrust….or you may be going through one. How have you responded at such a time? Have you tried in your strength to get things going your way without fully trusting in the One who says, “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?” (Jer.32:27). Let our meditation today help us to learn how David put his confidence in God:

Declaration of David about the LORD:

V1 –“ …in You I take refuge”: Though David’s life was in peril, he chose to trust in Lord rather than trusting in his resources. Only under His mighty wings can we take refuge in trying times! Whatever be the situation, “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you;” (Psalm 55:22)
V2 – “…apart from You I have no good thing.” David knew that at his very best – all of his goodness – was nothing apart from God. Nothing in this world will ever satisfy us. Jesus is more than enough for us!
V5 – “…You alone are my portion and my cup;” In the days of Moses, God said to the Levities: ‘I am your portion and your inheritance’ (Numbers 18:20). David understood that this was a promise given not only to the priests, but also to all who would trust God.

Outcome of David’s confidence

V9 – “Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;” He experienced great joy within himself. In John 15:11 Jesus reminds us of the fullness of joy in abiding in Him!—that involves keeping His commands and putting our confidence in Him.
Vs9&10 – “…my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead…” David was confident about God’s care and blessing not just in this life but in the life beyond. The Bible teaches us that all who believe in the Lord Jesus will live even after dying (John 11:25). God loves each one of us that He gave His only Son so that we may not perish but have eternal life! (John 3:16).
V11 – “You make known to me the path of life;” only God can show us the correct path of life till we reach eternity. Jesus says, ‘I am the Way, the Truth and the Life’ (John 14:6). Jesus says He is the only Way that can rightly lead us to Father God. He declared: “He who has seen Me has seen the Father…” (John 14:9).

Can we confidently trust the LORD irrespective of our situation? Our answered prayers are an evidence that Lord is on our side; then can we trust that our unanswered prayers are an evidence that God knows what is best for us? Despite the present circumstances, can we look to the eternal blessing promised for us? Then we can assuredly and with joy in our hearts trust God in our trying times!

Let us declare: “I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.”(Psalm 27:13)
