Psalms 21

“For the king trusts in the LORD; through the unfailing love of the Most High he will not be shaken.” -Psalms 21:7

Trusting in God’s unfailing love was the secret of king David’s successful life. It was not smooth sailing all the way- David had troubles, trials, enemies, instances when his life was threatened…yet in all these, his constant trust in the Most High God held him through it all! The Psalm is one of assurance of God’s blessing in answer to his prayer outlined in Psalms 20.

David’s assurance in God’s blessings in his life can be viewed in 3 aspects:

I.        Having Joy in God’s strength & salvation (Ps 21:1-2)

David had realized from a young age that it is God’s power at work in/ through him that brought deliverances in his life. Being a king, he did not boast in his strength or the strength of his army. He had stated in Ps.20:7: “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; But we will remember the name of the LORD our God.” God gave him his heart’s desire because at the centre of it was a desire to bring glory and honour to God.

Does our trust lie in ourselves, our friends, our resources, etc? All will fail us at some point- only a constant trust in God and His strength can deliver us in the most tough circumstances. How about our prayers? Selfish gains? James 4:3 says, “You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.”

May our prayers and desires honour God!

II.        Being Grateful for God’s goodness (Ps 21:3-7)

David acknowledged God as the Source of all his blessing! James 1:17 says, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights…”  The blessing of the joy God’s presence was more exceeding than any other! That was enough to keep David’s faith and trust in God intact.

Experiencing the joy of salvation through Christ Jesus is the best blessing anyone can have in one’s lifetime. 1 Peter 1:8&9 says, “…Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.” Through your knowledge of Him, His divine power provides everything else you need for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3).

Seek Christ first, everything else will be added to you.

III.        Envisioning God’s triumph over His enemies (Ps 21:8-12)

David was confident of God’s triumph over His enemies. Punishment and destruction will be their end. David being God’s anointed was protected from the snares of his enemies and so he had experienced God’s deliverance from the hand of the enemy. Psalm 105:15 says, “….Do not touch My anointed ones, And do My prophets no harm.” God sees to the welfare and protection of His children in every circumstance. “Our lives are in his hands,  and he keeps our feet from stumbling.” (Ps.66:9 NLT)

We who have trusted Him know that there will be a day of reckoning when God’s truth and justice will prevail! Even when for a time we see evil take the upper hand,

let us envision God’s ultimate triumph over evil and the reign of His truth and justice!

The Psalm ends with a shout of joy and David’s call to God’s faithful people to praise Him! May we too learn to trust God’s unfailing love in all circumstances and keep praising Him with grateful hearts for all His goodness in our lives!

Remember :  “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.” Psalm 136:1 [NLT]

Listen- Give thanks to the LORD
