Psalms 2

“Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, and the very ends of the earth as Your possession.” - Psalm 2:8

This is a royal Psalm, which focuses the coming glorious reign of the Messiah. The apostles quote this Psalm in Acts.4:24-26 where they attribute the authorship of the Psalm to David. Both Psalm 110 and this Psalm point prophetically to the coming rule of Jesus. [Adapted from NKJV Study Bible] Verses 7 – 9 are the Son’s declaration of the Father’s decree. In Vs.7 it says “I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord: He said to me…..” Therefore Vs.8 can be seen as Father God’s declaration to His Son Jesus Christ, which was perceived in his spirit by David and prophetically stated.

The key verse speaks of Father God’s plan of having the nations as the possession of Jesus Christ. Even in the parable of the Wicked Vine -growers, in Matthew 21:38, when the owner of the vineyard sent his son, the response of the vine-growers was: “This is the heir, come, let us kill him and seize the inheritance.”  In Revelation 2:26-27 in the message to the church at Thyatira, Jesus speaks, “He who overcomes, and he who keeps my deed until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations… as I also have received authority from My Father.”

This authority is given to His disciples: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations …..”(Matt.28:19); and in Luke 10:19: “Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy…” Jesus says He has authority over all people that He might give eternal life to all God gives Him (John 17:2). In commissioning His first disciples, Jesus stated, “but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.” (Acts 1:8). This is extended to us as well when Paul states in Acts 13:47: “For the Lord has commanded us , ‘I have placed you as a light for the gentiles that you may bring salvation to the end of the earth.’"

As we can see in these verses, the desire of the Father was to see that the whole world and all peoples come to knowledge of the saving power of Jesus Christ. As the whole world is under the control of the devil (1 John 5:19), God placed His son Jesus Christ a s a light to lead people from darkness to God’s marvellous light.

Jesus understood the authority conferred on Him by the Father and delegated that authority to every disciple of His. As we take up this responsibility from Jesus to be the carriers of the message of  Salvation to the remotest parts of the earth, we fulfill the scripture:

Gal.3:8 “The scripture foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “All the nations will be blessed in you.” So then, those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer.” What is the blessing that comes through Abraham?  It is salvation through Jesus Christ! Galatians 3:16 explains, “And to your seed,” that is, Christ.”

As Paul explains the strategy of the devil in 2 Corinthians 4:4 “…. The god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ…” Every disciple of Jesus has the responsibility to carry the gospel, which is light to people who are in the darkness of sin, to come to God’s light. We are the chosen ones that we may proclaim the excellencies of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light! (1 Peter 2:9)

The Promise:  “For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.”  -Habakkuk 2:14
