Psalm 27 is a Psalm of fearless trust in the God – it is an exuberant declaration of faith. In Psa 27:1, David states that the LORD is the defense for his life. He declares the confidence that God will lift him up on a rock and He will hide him in His tabernacle. How was David able to put such trust in God? It comes from the deep intimacy that he had developed with the Lord. In Psa 27:4, he says that the most important desire of his life was to seek to dwell in the Lord’s house every single day of his life and to behold the beauty of the Lord and to meditate in His temple. What a blessed experience – to have the presence of the Lord, every moment of life!

However, the deepest of David’s experience is portrayed in Psa 27:10. “When my father and my mother forsake me…..” -protection offered by a parent is the safest place for a child. David may be thinking of the instance when he felt rejected by his family when Prophet Samuel came to their home and invited Jesse (David’s father) and his household to the sacrifice (1Sam.16: 4-12)- it was a family celebration and all his sons were invited- David was left out as though insignificant to be even called from where he was tending the sheep. But we see that in Psa 27:11 - when the Lord confirms to Samuel that none of Jesse’s sons who were brought to him was selected by God, Samuel asks the question, “Are these all the children?” It was then Jesse tells the prophet of David. When the Prophet had clearly instructed Jesse to call his sons, it was strange David was left out!

The next verse says David was “ruddy, with beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance.” May be to Jesse, David is a little lad capable only to tend the sheep or he was more concerned about the sheep than David. We can understand when David says “when my father and mother forsake me..” God had already chosen David and no one could hamper GOD’s plan though he may have faced rejection from his family.

Look at another instance of rejection David had from his brother and others- 1Sam.17:28. David was insulted and turned away when he genuinely wanted to help save his people from the dreadful Philistine- Goliath. When he was brought to King Saul, he too saw David as a youth unable to fight the giant (1 Sam.18:33). But the LORD who had already chosen David and anointed him to be king helped him fight the giant with a sling and stone! David’s strength and victory came from the Living GOD, who he proclaimed to be His help and Deliverer from this Philistine (1 Sam.18:34-37). The LORD took care of David even when he faced the giant!

This is a word of encouragement to all who feel forsaken, rejected, looked down upon by family, friends or their employers. Or you may be facing a formidable problem and seeing no way forward. If we have truly put our trust in the Living God from whom our help comes from, we have his comforting presence always with us. The LORD tells us in Isaiah 49:15: “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!” Like David let us proclaim our faith in the One who says even to our old age, He will sustain us! (Isaiah 46:4).
