TODAY'S DEVOTIONAL

EQUIPPED BY THE WORD OF GOD

Thursday, 6 February 2020

2 Timothy 3 : 1-17

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, fully equipped for every good work”. -2 Timothy 3:16-17

The Bible is not a compilation of human ideas about God, it is the inspired word of God. 2Timothy 3:16 says: “All scripture is God-breathed.” The Greek word theopneustos used, means ‘Theo’ - God and ‘pneustos’- breath, which is ‘God-breathed’’ or ‘by the inspiration of God.’’God moved over forty authors from varying backgrounds having individual writing styles, talents, personalities and language skills during a period of 1500 years to write the Holy Bible. God, by the Holy Spirit revealed who He is to the authors, unveiling His plans and directions for His people, "for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.” (2 Peter 1:21). Thus, all Scripture is absolutely reliable. It isn’t just sufficient to have an intellectual knowledge of God’s Word, but there is an intended application of the Word given to us.

Why is the Word of God given to us?

  1. Instruction : The Word of God is given for teaching and instruction. It authoritatively gives us the fundamental doctrines of the Christian faith. The Bible teaches us who God is and His salvation plan. Every man of God has the duty to teach the scripture in truth (2 Timothy 4:1-2) and every believer has the responsibility to examine the scriptures and ensure that the Word they have been taught is true (Acts 17:11; 1Thess. 5:21)

  2. Conviction: The Word of God is profitable for reproof and conviction. The deeper our revelation of God from the scripture, the more we understand the shortcomings in our own lives. It convicts us of sin. The Bible gives us a clear understanding on matters pertaining to daily Christian living, enabling us to identify areas where we’ve gone wrong. For instance, Ephesians 6:1-4 gives instructions on the relationship between parents and children. If children have been disobedient to their parents or if parents have been harsh to their children, the Bible convicts us of the wrong.

  3. Correction: As we understand God’s Word and realize areas where we have gone wrong, a correction is required in those aspects. When we accept the reproof, the Word of God shows us how to correct our ways and walk in a straight path with Him. “But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.” (1 John 1:9 NLT)

  4. Training: When our ways have been corrected, the Word of God trains us in righteousness –that is to continue in a right relationship with God. The Bible provides us guidance and trains us on living in a manner pleasing to God and constantly glorifying Him through our lives. “…let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith…” (Heb. 12:1-2)

The Outcome of the Word of God in our Lives:

The result of the applied Word of God in our lives is that we become mature servants of God, fully equipped to serve the Lord in every area that He has called us to. The Bible provides us all the resources we need to serve Him. In times of spiritual warfare, the scripture is alive and active, a powerful weapon that we can wield against any stronghold. While ministering to others, Scripture provides us a revelation of God’s love that we can share.  The Word of God thoroughly prepares and equips us in every way to the do the good works that He has already prepared for us to walk in. (Ephesians 2:10)

Prayer:

Precious Heavenly Father, thank you for Your infallible Word that You have given us. Help us to grow in and through your Word, that we may be mature disciples serving you in all truth. Amen!
