Revelations 14 : 1-20

And I heard a sound from heaven like the roar of mighty ocean waves or the rolling of loud thunder. It was like the sound of many harpists playing together. (Revelation 14:2 [NLT] )

Revelation is a book which needs to be read and understood in its original intend. It is not for speculation. There are many things written which human wisdom cannot fathom, but through the revelation of the Holy Spirit, we can understand. This book is full of revelation of the Godhead, events that are yet to happen, heaven and heavenly beings. So it naturally arises curiosity in the minds of readers; but more than the curiosity, we need to heed to the core message it gives. It beautifully brings out how the end of everything seen in this universe ushers us to the future eternity. It is here the word is fulfilled: And this is the plan: At the right time He will bring everything together under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth. (Eph. 1:10 [NLT] )

In today's reading we see the consummation of earthly worship opening up to the heavenly one. A great multitude saved by the Lord stands with Him in the Holy Hill singing and worshiping Him. This great choir sang a wonderful new song in front of the throne of God ... No one could learn this song except … redeemed from the earth. (Rev. 14:3 [NLT])

The maturity to join this heavenly Choir is based on our earthly conduct. The word very clearly shows certain unique features of these ones in the Heavenly Choir.

  • They had the name of the Father and His Son Jesus written on their forehead. This means that they are united with the Godhead and their being is now fully for the Lord. They don’t have divided attention. They have singular focus and hence their adoration is with their whole being in unison. What a contrast with the people in Revelation 13; where people are marked on their forehead with the mark of the Antichrist, showing their allegiance to Satan and worshiping him.

  • They were standing on the Holy Hill with the Lord. Who may worship in Your sanctuary, LORD? Who may enter Your presence on Your holy hill? Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from sincere hearts. ... Such people will stand firm forever. (Psa.15:1-5 [NLT] )

  • The unity among them is to be noted. Every note is sung in unison, orchestrated and well practiced by these ones preferably during their life time on earth by Holy Spirit himself. This is because all these ones coming from different walks of life are singing in unison and a new song, which nobody else knows. Only the ones who are saved by grace and led by the Spirit will be able mature in this manner. So we can understand from this context how much they have been prepared here on earth during their lifetime in order to be present in this heavenly choir. Let us heed to the directions of the Holy Spirit so that one day we will be standing in this Holy Hill to worship our savior.

  • Lastly, note that they were pure ones. Rev 14:4 shows how they are the ones purchased by the priceless blood of Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary as a special offering to God and the Lamb. The purity is theirs due to their lives being redeemed and made pure by the Lord Himself. They themselves have joined willingly to the Lord and stood with Him even at the cost of their own lives.

Admonition:

So let us enhance our preparation on this earth for heaven. Let us stay pure, consecrated to the Lord and be led by the Spirit.
