John 6 : 22-59
“But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you.—” John 6:27[NLT]
In the pursuit of life, people seek many things. Some seek happiness as the ultimate goal for which the pleasures the world become a means; others seek it in religious ways of filling the emptiness in their soul; yet others seek in making it “big” in life, which after reaching the top find that they are alone and there is no more achieving to do! That brings us to the question, “What’s worth seeking in life?”
In our reading, we see people seeking Jesus. At first look, it definitely is the right thing to do….but here Jesus points out to them the wrong reasons in their seeking! The feeding of the five thousand with the five loaves and two fish was an astounding miracle for the crowd. Soon after He left that place, some people came seeking Him- the reason as Jesus stated: “… I say to you, you seek Me not because you saw the signs but because you ate of the loaves and you were filled.” (John 6:26). If seeking Jesus is just for satisfying our immediate need…something to get from Him—that will not sustain us for long. Instead seeking Him not just for the now, but for the hereafter is right- as our life does not end on the earth but there is eternity to think about! As our key verse rightly says, “Spend your energy seeking the eternal life” that Christ Jesus can give!
From our text, here are the Right Reasons for seeking Jesus:
-
Jesus is the Saviour of the world: Jesus says (Vs.29), “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.” Why did God send His Son into the world? –“For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” (John 3:17). ‘Jesus’ the name means “he will save His people from their sins” (Matt.1:21). He paid the price of our sin with His life so that we can be saved when we receive Him by faith.
-
Jesus is our Sufficient Portion: Jesus guarantees us, “I am the Bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” (Vs.35). We can never be fully satisfied by the perishing bread of the world and Jesus tells us not to be worried about what we eat or drink: “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’…For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matt.6:31-33). He is our Sustainer and will provide for our needs!
-
Jesus is our Security– Jesus promises us: “…the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.”(Vs.37). Even if the whole world forsakes us, we can come to the One who said, “I will never leave you, nor forsake you.” (Heb.13:5). He is the Good Shepherd who knows His own by name and keeps them securely in His fold (John 10:11;27;28)
-
Jesus is our Surety– Jesus assures us that everyone “who believes in Him may have everlasting life and I will raise him up at the last day.” Just as He was raised from death every believer will be resurrected. In John 11:25 Jesus says, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.” What a future hope and surety for everyone who puts his/her faith in Jesus Christ!
Friend, if you are seeking after the temporal- the things that are here today and gone tomorrow or if you are seeking to fill that emptiness in your soul- why don’t you seek Jesus? You can find rest for your souls only in Him (Matt.11:29).
Quote to Remember: “WISE MEN STILL SEEK HIM!”
