Genesis 24 : 33-67

“He answered, 'The LORD, whom I have always obeyed, will send his angel with you and give you success. You will get for my son a wife from my own people, from my father's family.” -Genesis 24:40 [GNT]

We are called to serve and whole heartedly depend and trust in the God of heaven and earth, our Creator. God our creator knows every moment of our lives—our thoughts, intents, desires, challenges, success, joy and pains— are all laid bare before Him. God’s servant, Abraham desired to have a wife for his son from his relatives. This desire of God’s servant was a determined one. He did not only think of it, but he really wanted to see it come to pass.

Abraham gives this great responsibility to his chief servant to travel to the land he had come from and seek out a suitable bride for his son Isaac. This servant was well aware of Abraham’s covenant relationship with God, as visible in the manner he goes about his task. In his statement to the family of Rebecca, we see the servant speak of Abraham thus: “But he said to me, ‘The Lord, before whom I walk, will send His angel with you and prosper your way;…”(V40) There is always a way to move the Lord into action, that is, through His word and covenant relationship with His people. See the example in the life of David from 1 Kings 2:4, 1 Kings 3:14 and 1 Kings 8:22-24—a display of God’s covenant relationship and respect for His word. The statements of Abraham’s servant in Vs.35-38 are the reflections of the LORD’s covenant made to Abraham in Genesis 12:2 and Genesis 22:17-18.

Abraham’s desire of choosing a wife for his son and his servant’s willingness to obey his master teaches us a clear concept of hearts joining and willing to obey the master’s command. God is always willing to bring to fulfillment the desires of those who diligently seek him—“He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him;He also will hear their cry and save them.” (Psalm 145:19) The prayers of Abraham’s servant (Vs.42-49) and the response of Laban and Bethuel (V50) show how much God listens to His obedient children and brings fulfillment to the desires of their hearts.

God is always ready to uphold His covenant with His word and respond to the voice of his humble and obedient servant. The promises of God to Abraham did not only bring his desires to fulfillment, but also prepared a foundation for the establishment of His word and empowerment and comfort for His obedient children. At last Abraham’s desire came to a complete fulfillment; the servant brought Rebecca to her master –‘The servant told Isaac everything he had done. Then Isaac brought Rebecca into the tent that his mother Sarah had lived in, and she became his wife. Isaac loved Rebecca, and so he was comforted for the loss of his mother.’ (Genesis 24:66-67).

May we who trust in the Lord be encouraged with His promise today: “Trust in the Lord, and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass.” (Psalm 37:3-5)

Prayer: “Dear LORD, help me to trust in You that You will fulfill Your word and grant me the desires of my heart as I walk in Your way.” Amen.
