Ephesians 1 : 1-14

“…that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him.” -Ephesians1:10

The book of Ephesians is a letter written while Apostle Paul was in prison. Here the Holy Spirit gives us the revelation of the Church and the spiritual blessings we have in Christ Jesus which was hidden throughout the ages.

In the key verse (Eph 1:10), the Holy Spirit beautifully reveals the will of God – that in Christ all would become one! In the Gospel of John, the process through which a person will be found in Christ is given: “but to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” (John 1:12-13). To them God the Father has given numerous blessings through Jesus Christ, which are enlisted in today’s reading:

  1. Blessed us with the spiritual blessings (Eph 1:3):  By His grace God has given all the spiritual gifts required for the growth of a child of God. Our duty is to use and invest them wisely. Jesus instructed us to lay up treasures in heaven because, where our treasure is, there our heart will also be (Matt.5:20-21).

  2. Chosen us to be holy and blameless (Eph 1:4): God’s purpose concerning us is to be a holy and blameless people. Apostle Peter exhorts – "but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct since it is written, "You shall be holy, for I am holy." (1Peter 1:15-16). And He is able! (Jude 1:24)

  3. Predestined us to be sons (Eph 1:5): God adopted us as sons. “For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!" (Rom.8:15)

  4. Made us accepted (Eph 1:6): Entry of sin made a barrier between God and mankind. But, now in Christ Jesus, you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For He, Himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility (Eph.2:13-14).

  5. Redemption through His blood (Eph 1:7): “Knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.” (1 Peter1:18-19).

  6. Made known to us the mystery of his will (Eph 1:9-10): Through Christ God has revealed several mysteries to mankind which were hidden previously. One of the mysteries is given in the key verse. Another one is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. (Eph.3:6)

  7. We Obtained an Inheritance (Eph 1:11): As a child of God, we received the privilege of His inheritance, not by any of our works but by His grace. “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God(Eph.2:19)

  8. Sealed us with Holy Spirit (Eph 1:13):  This is one of the greatest gifts God has given to mankind through Jesus Christ. “Therefore do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” (Eph.4:30)

God has done great things for each of us. By His grace He allowed us to know Him along with others in the same faith. All this is not just for our knowledge but for practicing, teaching, strengthening, guiding and equipping our fellow brethren and moreover preparing ourselves for His Second Coming.

Think on:

“…so that He may establish your hearts blameless in holiness

before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints.”

-1 Thessalonians 3:13
