Psalms 91

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.” -Psalm 91:1 [ESV]

Psalm 91 speaks of God’s faithfulness to those who dwell in Him. Just as a good earthly father ensures the safety of his child, God our Heavenly Father who loves us, will keep us safe under His wings of protection! Troubles and struggles maybe experienced in our lives but the Psalm reminds the readers that those who call on the name of the LORD will never be forsaken!

In the story of Daniel (Daniel 6), a decree was passed to use Daniel’s faith in God against him; but he continued to pray faithfully to God. Daniel was found guilty by the law makers and thrown into the lion’s den. Great is God’s faithfulness! The mouths of the lions were shut and no harm came upon Daniel. As it says in Verse 15 of the Psalm, “he will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honour him.” No matter what may come our way, remember our God has a plan to prosper us and not to harm! (Jeremiah 29:11)

Look into the lives of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, the three Hebrew men thrown into a fiery furnace by Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, when they refused to bow down to the king’s image. God intervened in the most impossible of situations and the three were preserved from harm; the king saw four men walking in the flames, “…the fourth is like the Son of God.”  Verse 10 of our Psalm says, “no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent.”

When we take shelter of the Most High we will not fear our circumstances because we believe in a God who has planned the heaven’s best for each of us. Verse 5 says “You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.” Such was the story of great missionaries who persistently kept moving forward although their situations were against them because they were at rest in the shadow of the Almighty! Time and situation remained no barrier for them to continue the Lord’s work!

God expects from His people to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5) Peter as he was walking on the water towards Jesus, panicked when a wind hit and he started to drown and cried out “Lord save me!” And immediately Jesus stretched out His hands and saved him!

A life of a believer is never promised to be a smooth ride; there could be trials, temptations and tragedies but through all this you will find persistence during trials, resistance against temptations (v13) and rest during a tragedy. God has not forgotten us! He knew us even before we came into this world (Jeremiah 1:5). We the children of God are seated in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:6). We are secure in Him! Whatever circumstances you are going through today, trust Him to see you through-rest and abide in the shadow of the Almighty!

Thought- "God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, Even though the earth be removed, And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; "(Psalm 46:1,2)
