TODAY'S DEVOTIONAL

A WISE OR FOOLISH BUILDER?

Tuesday, 12 February 2019

Luke 6 : 39-49

He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the torrent burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. -Luke 6:48

Let us examine Jesus’ teaching on being built on the rock as how it pertains to our life. Proverbs 24:3 says, “By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established.” This is not only true of our house, it is also true of our life. The emphasis here is - You are building a life and the foundation you choose to build on, is the most important feature of your life. In the verses that follow, Jesus illustrates two ways of building your life.

Building your life on a firm foundation:
Jesus says that those who listen and obey His words are those who build their life upon a strong foundation. John 1 :4 says, “In Him [Christ] was life, and the life was the light of men.” Hence, we understand He is the Source of our life!  His words, all that He spoke, are spirit and life (John 6:63). This life comes by accepting His lordship over our life by repenting from our sin and turning to God.
To build our life on a firm foundation now, we have to listen and obey Him. His words are Truth. When we obey his words, His Life flows into our life and the truth will set us free- free from the shackles of sin and the lies of the devil. Place your faith in Jesus Christ today! If you’ve already placed your faith in Him, then continue to grow in Him by building on the foundation of His Word.
Your life will be like a building which has its foundations on a solid Rock- Christ Jesus Himself! 1 Cor.3:11 says, “For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” A life built on the sure foundation of Jesus Christ will stand firm, no matter what storms of life rise up against us.

Destroying your life on the wrong foundation:
Jesus draws on His previous parable and applies it negatively to those who refuse to obey His words. In Matthew 7:26 Jesus says, “Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.” Contrary to the wise man is a foolish man. Such a person does not choose life which is in Jesus Christ, but rather tries to build his life on his own understanding and perception of life. One’s own understanding has the flaw of being influenced by the world and the devil whose scheme is to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10). Listening to him and building one’s life is quite easy and not laborious. Such a person is short-sighted and avoids toil, quick to get things done and does not think of the future. Blessed is the man who sees things, not in the light of the present, but in the light of eternity.

When we learn that often the hard way which is spelt out in His Word is the best way and far-sightedness is the right view, we will establish our lives upon the teaching of Christ Jesus and no storms of life will ever shake us.

As we understand these principles, let us be cautious to work out our Salvation with fear and trembling (Phil.2:12).

Prayer:

Almighty God our Father, please enable us to

build our lives on Your word and live in accordance with

Your will till we meet face to face through Jesus Christ,

Amen.
