A wedding feast at Cana to which Jesus, His disciples and His mother were invited, was where the first miracle of Jesus took place. Wine which was essential to a Jewish feast ran out at the wedding. For the provisions to fail at a wedding would be a terrible humiliation for the bride and the groom.

Jesus intervened at the right time by performing a miracle of turning the water that were filled in the stone jars, into wine, which the Master of ceremonies said tasted better than the previous wine. Jesus spoke no word of power, nor put forth His hand. But a miracle was performed. The objective of the miracle was to reveal Christ and His glory, that His disciples might believe in Him. Before this they "believed" on the testimony of John (John 1:35-51); now they saw His almighty power, and their faith was established.

Let’s look at the various aspects of this miracle:

Presence of Jesus: Jesus was invited for the wedding! Although the household went through a humiliating problem, Jesus the Provider (Jehovah Jireh) is present there! In Jesus, the imperfections have become perfect, and grace has become sufficient and more than sufficient for every need. Are you in need or in great distress? Are you searching for an answer? Just take a moment and think. Did you invite Jesus to your life? Is Jesus present in your situation? If He is there, then allow Him to work. He will change your mourning into dancing. Nothing is impossible with God!

Faith of Mary: Mary’s humility and strong trust is depicted in her direction to the servants: "Do whatever he tells you.” Mary had faith even when she didn’t know what Jesus was going to do. Like Mary, are we willing to yield to Him both in the time and the manner of His responses to our petitions? When our prayers are not answered immediately, do we wait for His perfect time? Or do we look for other solutions? Remember: Jesus can bring out the best in every situation of our lives. Hebrews 11:6 says “And it is impossible to please God without faith…”

The vessels:  Jesus chose the 6 stone water jars kept outside for Jewish purification rituals. In the wedding house, there would have been other vessels of greater value or even wine jars. But Jesus chose these weathered stone jars unnoticed by people and only used for ceremonial washing.  We understand that God’s selection is not like man’s which we read of in 1 Corinthians 1:26-29.  Weren’t we once those stone Jars kept outside, not useful, foolish and written off by men as good for nothing? Just like how Jesus used these stone jars for a miracle, we too have been chosen for a special purpose. Unfit for use, each one of us were like those stone jars Jesus has chosen to work in us and through us.

The obedient & submissive servants: Jesus asked the servants to fill the jars with water. Water resembles the Word of God.  Just as the empty vessels were filled with water, God requires of us to be filled with the word of God after being chosen. His servants are there to help us; but our submission and choosing to listen to His word is of great value. When we submit to the Word of God we will be cleansed and filled.

The Glory of God revealed: This miracle of turning the water into wine reveals Christ’s glory. This was the first miraculous sign which Jesus did. The glory of God is revealed especially in His act of creation (Ps. 19:1-2). Likewise, Christ’s "eternal power and deity" (Rom 1:20) were manifested at the beginning of His miracles through an act of creation: "He . . . made the water wine" (John 4:46).

Almighty God I submit myself into Your hand and I believe that You can turn my life for Your glory as You have done at Cana. In Jesus name,  Amen.
