Colossians 3 : 12-25
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” -Colossians 3:12
Colossians 3 begins with Paul exhorting us to live a life that pursues the things that Christ does while seated at the right hand of God the Father. He reminds us of what being hidden in Christ Jesus, really means.
Throughout Colossians we see that Christ had done everything for our Salvation and Paul through the Holy Spirit gives instructions on how we should respond to what Christ has done. Since God has chosen us, our response should encompass the five virtues given in the key verse, so that our life is worthy of the Lord. Col. 3:10 so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,
Yes. It is true that God is re-creating us, but He will not force these changes upon us. He will only instruct us as seen in the key verse above, we are to clothe ourselves with something new on a daily basis.
Paul makes the process of putting off and on, easy for us to understand for it is ….
….. just like when we put off the old soiled clothing and put on the new washed ones so that we are clean. In the same way we should shun our old ways and walk in the newness of life. Romans 6:4: Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. When we were outside we were so diligent in keeping what we thought was the law of God through our traditions. Now God wants us to be just as committed to walking in the newness of life given to us in Christ Jesus.
….. just like how we wear appropriate clothing for different occasions to suit the need. We should also put on compassion when we see others struggling in situations, may (not be) of their own doing. Put on kindness by going out of your way to help someone who is not your responsibility, but you see needs assistance. Put on humility when your self rises, for there is no such flatterer as a man’s self. Put on gentleness in an argument. Prov. 15:1: A gentle response defuses anger, …... Put on patience while enduring trials in life whether it is deserved or undeserved.
If you argue that you can put them on, its stating that Christ cannot do it in you. But the Scripture says, “I can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens me…” Phil 4:13.
Remember He chose to manifest Himself in the flesh, but we still ignore Him in our flesh. It is easy to recognize the King in kingly clothing, but it is not easy to recognize Him in ordinary clothing. So let us adorn the ordinary clothing in which He came and be in perfect harmony with each other.
…..just like our attire is a statement of our status and morality, let our new wardrobe be a statement that reflects the character of Christ Jesus in us. In this way you also become the unwritten gospel. 2 Corinthians 4:10: We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.
Dear Lord, I pray that you will help me through
Your Spirit to put off my old nature and put
on the new nature which will be reflected through
my thoughts and acts of love. In Jesus’ Name.
