Psalm 45 celebrates a royal wedding and clearly points to the future wedding of the Messiah, the King and His bride. Though the initial picture is of a royal marriage, the words also show the loving relationship that exists between Jesus Christ and His bride, the Church. The Psalmist makes two announcements concerning the reign of Christ:

1 – The Eternity of His Reign

“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever.” (V6):  All earthly kings and rulers have/had to give up their crown at some point of time. But the King of Kings rules forever! While earthly kingdoms pass away, His is ever-increasing Kingdom shall endure forever. All creation attests the Creator’s sovereign reign, but the people of God have the sole and special privilege of witnessing His rule over the universe. When God’s people humble themselves before God and seek to obey Him in the power of the Holy Spirit, their lives become a testimony of God’s just reign, that people take notice. Besides, we grow in holiness as we live out His commandments. That holiness seen in the church resulting from its obedience to God bears witness to the world that He is the just and good King. If the church has to be a credible witness in the world, it must obey the Lord and repent whenever it fails. May we strive to be the best we can be and do the best we can do through the power of the Holy Spirit until that day. “And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.” (Luke 1:33).

2 – The Righteousness of His Reign

Christ Jesus’ reign is one of righteousness. That applies in the life of a child of God. All the commands and demands of the Lord are for our wellbeing if we are willing to obey.  Some may be difficult to understand and fulfill, but there is great reward in keeping them. There are no more just and right laws than those God has given to us concerning our dealings with one another. “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” (Luke 6:31) His command for our submission to God is right and just. He requires that we obey, reverence and love Him. There is nothing more safe, right and good than to be in the will of the One that loves righteousness and hates iniquity.

Let us be encouraged then, to set our eyes on Christ Jesus—the Bridegroom, who is the Author and Perfecter of our faith. For He is faithful and true and He promises to present us—His bride, to His Father as one washed clean of every impurity.  Let us live repentant lives, pray without ceasing to be more faithful, more enduring, more loving, more forgiving. We are all given opportunities in our daily lives to model obedience and faithfulness, love and forgiveness.  While Jesus is an example to follow He is also the One who pours His love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit- a love not short-lived but a love which is eternal and perfect.

Prayer: “Loving Lord, we pray that You take our minds and think through them, take our lips and speak through them, take our hearts and set them on fire; help us strive more and more to be like You; May Your kingdom reign in and through our lives, in Jesus name, Amen.”
