WHO IS A WISE WOMAN?

Proverbs 14 : 1-35

“The wise woman builds her house, but the foolish pulls it down with her hands." - Proverbs 14: 1

If you ask the world, “Who is a wise woman?” there may be hundred answers like beautiful, dynamic, enthusiastic, having good character, genuine, faithful, etc; but there is a different line the Word of God speaks about a wise woman- it is the one who builds her house! That definition may not strike a chord in many today, but those who are keen to follow God’s principles may as well understand what God thinks of how a wise woman should be.

Let’s go through a few principles that would make a woman wise if she pursues them diligently. The wise woman can speak to herself these nuggets of wisdom:

  • The Lord – fear Him!

The Bible is quite direct in letting us know that this is the place to begin our search for wisdom: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” (Proverbs 1:7) A wise woman always desires to know Him more and experience more of God’s presence in her life. A reverent fear of God guides her life and ways.

  • My Husband - Submit to him!

A wise woman, who wishes to see the Lord working in her husband and see a godly change in him, needs nothing to do other than to be submissive to him because the promise is that such husbands can be won by the conduct of their wives. “Wives, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without word, may be won by the conduct of their wives.” (1 Peter 3:1). For some, it may take time, but a godly wife’s patient and persistent good character influences him.

  • My children – teach them!

The aim of a wise woman in raising her children is to train them to love God and to follow Him because God seeks godly offspring (Malachi 2:15). This requires both kindness and discipline, keeping in mind not to provoke them to anger (Ephesians 6:4) but to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). From a very tender age, she who is wise will teach her children the importance of reading, studying, memorizing and obeying God’s Word!

  • My tongue – control it!

A wise woman has more of encouraging words, not of self-pitying or criticizing words.  While speaking to others she should be ‘slow to speak’, (James 1:19) and not allow corrupt words to proceed out of her mouth but only what is good for necessary for the edification of others, that it may impart grace to the hearers (Ephesians 4:29). She has to learn to take her personal dissatisfaction, complaints and pains to the Lord in prayer.

  • My heart – guide it!

Proverbs 23:19 says, “Hear, my son, and be wise; and guide your heart in the way.” A wise woman guards her affections; she takes care of her activities so that she has time for the things of the Lord and is not focused on the things of the world. It is wise for us as godly women to set guidelines to keep worldliness from creeping into our own personal lives or homes. Hence a godly woman learns to guard her heart with diligence.

  • My eternity – pursue it!

A wise woman is confident that she has been given the gift of God that is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23) which is not earned by works lest anyone should boast (Ephesians 2:8-9). Hence every day she has to learn to pursue the gathering of “oil in her lamp” so that when the Lord returns, she will be taken with Him.

Prayer: Lord Jesus may my life be lived wisely in You that when You come I will be taken with You. Amen
