Genesis 1 : 1-31

'Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.' –Genesis 1:3

At the beginning of Creation, God spoke, “Let there be light!” The phrases that describe the earth at first—“without form, void, darkness” point to chaos, disaster and devastation and into this utter ruin symbolised as darkness, God brings in light!* Light was fundamental for all of creation’s sustenance. Then we see the rest of creation take shape as God continued to bring beauty, order and harmony into the once chaos that prevailed on the earth. Profound for us to think on?

Many of us from our understanding of the Bible know how into this beautiful world God created, the darkness of sin again cast its shadow with the fall of the first man and woman. From then we see how the grip of evil caught on…we read in Genesis 6:5 “Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” Yet God did not completely destroy the earth but preserved Noah and his family….but the once fallen man could only bring forth those of “his kind”- more sinful men. Not only did mankind get more and more entangled into the quagmire of sin but into the outcome of sin- separation from God and death.

Nevertheless, God’s eternal plan to redeem mankind from the darkness of sin, prevailed! In the fullness of time, came His Son of whom Isaiah prophesied: “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined.” (Isaiah 9:2). John spoke of Him: “There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.” (John 1:9) Jesus Himself spoke thus: “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” (John 8:12).

Just as God brought forth light into the chaotic void earth at the time of creation, Jesus the true light penetrates into the sin-ruined lives of people bringing them into the light of His truth and setting them free so that they may have the light of life!! You and I would have totally perished in our sin with no escape from eternal death hadn’t Christ Jesus willingly offered to take on our punishment for sin- death! By His death on the cross, He “paid in full” for every sin you and I could imagine to have committed. Today the offer is open to anyone who believes and receives His light into their lives—that they may have the light of life through Christ Jesus!

When God recreates the new heaven and the new earth and the holy city where those who are saved will dwell, it is spoken in Revelation 21:23-24: “…The Lamb is its light. And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it.” Christ Jesus, “The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29) will be its light!!! There will be nothing that defiles-no more sin or death in the holy city of God! What a beautiful vision awaiting every believer who has put his/her trust in Jesus the True Light!

If you are yet to come into this light, dear friend, God is able to speak into the deadness of your state: “Let there be light!” Let His light lighten your life so that He can bring in beauty for ashes, order into the chaotic situations you are going through and peace and harmony in your “knowing” Him!
