Isaiah 6 gives us a glimpse of the revelation of the glory of the LORD through the vision of Isaiah. This vision led him to a response of confession, which brought cleansing, which in turn enabled him to hear the voice of God and made him committed for a commission to take the message of God to His people.

The setting of Isaiah 6 is in the year 742 BC which records the death of Uzziah, the then king. Uzziah had been a good king in his initial years, but in his later years he became proud and he himself carried out the role of priest, and God struck him down. With his death, the hopes of many probably seemed dashed. The so-called good King Uzziah was dead and the next turn was for his wicked son to take over!  It is at this juncture that God broke through the situation and revealed Himself to Isaiah. 

The king of Judah may be dead, but Isaiah saw the King of Glory! Psalm 24:8,10 reminds us: “Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, The Lord mighty in battle. Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory.” There would have been no response from Isaiah if there had been no such revelation of the King of Glory. The awesome and glorious sight revealed his condition: “Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand he had taken off the altar with tongs; with it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips, your guilt is taken away, your sin atoned for.” (Isa 6:6-7) Isaiah had the privilege to see with his own eyes and hear with his own ears that would have made him rise to the second level of his service. We can see a chain of reactions here: revelation leads to awareness of sin, awareness leads to confession, confession brings cleansing, cleansing enables to see God’s glory and hear Him, and the hearing leads to the commission of God’s work. 

The voice of God as Isaiah heard it, is still echoing in our ears today: “Then I heard the voice of the LORD, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” and Isaiah’s response: “Here am I, send me.”  The great challenge of a missionary was taken up by the prophet. He was able to respond thus after his encounter with God. This teaches us that those who have had an encounter with God will never remain the same and those who have heard His heart’s cry will no longer remain in their comfort zone.  They will be ready to take on His call!

Once again the Spirit of God reminds us about the great commandment in Matthew 28:18-20.  IF that command to go out grips our hearts, we must respond in the same way as Isaiah said, “Here am I, Send me!” May the Lord lead us and transform us into His likeness and prepare us as vessels of honor to proclaim the good news- to take up the work of an evangelist to a dying world.
